I replaced my 2013 315 stamped tail piece with a Cast tail piece from Allen. It didn't require drilling. No tonal improvement other than no more rattling cover.
What string gauges did you use? Not being an electric player, I was going to try using .010, .0135, .025, .034 from a daddario exl110bt set to start. The strings in the specs on the fender site...
I played an A5 special, Big Mon F5, and my earlier F5S (that I have owned for a few years) back to back at Northfield's Michigan shop. I'm not a great picker that has played many mandolins of this...
I visited Northfield's Marshal shop back near the beginning of December. They had a couple of these there. They were working on a lower cost purchased option to add alongside the in-house Airloom...
I replaced the tailpiece on my MD 315, but only because the original cover was buzzing and I tired of fiddling with it. It was well worth it, but I wouldn't be expecting tonal improvement.
I have read on here countless times that plain steel strings are all the same and nearly all come from the same manufacturer regardless of what brand they are packaged with. That would leave you to...
In the "sad mining songs" subsection I'll nominate Utah Phillips's "Miners Lullaby" to go along with Darrell Scott's "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive", that was mentioned previously

My experience is with an MD315 (the f style version of the 305). I see no reason to change the tuners. Fitting an Allen TR-1 tailpiece was a simple, no drilling needed upgrade. No more...

Not a mandolin but here is a video:

Daddario ej72 strings might be pretty close ...
I'll gladly trade a couple sets of strings for 3 weeks of hiking in Colorado.

I recently set up a Washburn mandola for my cousin. The bridge that came with it was a mandolin bridge rather than a mandola bridge that would be compensated for 3 courses of wound strings and 1...
Here is a picture of my Primetone 1.5 after 18 months of use. No shaping or polishing other than play wear. It is matched up on an unused pick from the same pack.

I played an Eastman 315 for two years before I upgraded to a used Northfield F5s that I found here on the classifieds local to me. I played it and heard it played before bringing it home. After...
For those interested in all things Northfield that don't follow them on Facebook(or look at the MC homepage), here is a link they just shared to a new online publication with some interesting...
Check Out the Allen AR-2: http://www.allenguitar.com/tpcs_ar-2.htm
It has the "standard"(if there is a standard) hole spacing. I have one on a 3/4 guitar to Octave conversion and I put a Allen...
If you're going to request a Fogerty/CCR song, "Down on The Corner" would fit the occasion.
No mandolin content: https://youtu.be/vrMvblpZFq0
Driving home this evening heard this song on country radio. Wondered if it was Glen's daughter, Google answered with this when I got home. Some mandolin content.

Deleted after rereading the thread.
I personally use a smooth Primetone pick, but have you tried a pick that is sculpted or has holes for grip. Maybe if the pick feels more secure it might be easier to relax your grip a bit.
I put an Allen TR-1 on my MD315. I didn't have to drill or move any holes. In my opinion, it isn't worth changing unless you are getting buzzing or rattling from the stamped tailpiece like I was.
I am just west of Lancaster and I just went through a similar situation wanting to compare a Collings, Pava, and Northfield. I ended up buying a used Northfield F5S from the classifieds. I'd still...
I don't really like to revive a three year old thread to my first post on a new forum, but this thread and others like it made me put off replacing the original stamped tailpiece on my Eastman MD...
