It's a lot like a bass guitar - four strings, tuned EADG, flat fretted fingerboard - but closer in size to a double bass.
Tho is the pigmando guy but I think he may stick to doublenecks from now on - his previous one (a mando/tenor guitar with a weird body shape and a BIG knot in the middle of its pine body) went for...

Thanks, Martin! I was planning on spending a little time figuring out how to make this ABC stuff work but you've saved me the trouble. Much appreciated!
Now someone post a good variation, please.

Will need restoration, though.
Part 3... with some real dreadful guitar chords near the end!
Part 2...
Well, I tried. The basic idea was to use "scary" intervals as much as possible - minor seconds, tritones, a few minor thirds. It's terrible but I had fun. Maybe this will encourage some more of us...
I've got mine sketched out. It's really horrible with lots of nasty chromaticism! I'll try to settle the details and post at least a handwritten version in a few days.
Is this Tho X. Bui? Whatever it is, it'd well worth the opening bid.

Yeah, great stuff. I've always thought that e-mando solos heavily influenced by fado vocals would be a great idea. You'd have to be really good to pull that kind of thing off on an acoustic 8-string...
Indeed! I play lefty and am entirely too fond of five-course instruments and multiple necks!
Oh, and I want to know more about that Sicilian trio, too. Another thing I like is excessive bass...

I doubt an Eko is worth this kind of money but gotta love the "buttcrack" body shape.

Sounds like you need lower-tension strings with a smooth finish. I haven't tried all that many string sets, though, so maybe somebody else can give you a few specific recommendations. Or you could...
Phogg, try looking for photos of Abraham Prescott's basses. He built some really huge monsters with 48" scale length - most have been modified to make them playable but the bodies are still...
I used to play all sorts of instruments including mandolin, now I play double bass 98% of the time and electric bass 2%. But I have an electric bass tuned in fifths (an octave below mandocello) so...
Just to throw in two more bits of information: even the largest double basses are theoretically "undersized" compared to the proportions of the violin or violoncello. But they work. Violas are...
1/4 size double basses exist, have a scale length of about 35" and work well enough for folk jams even if they're plywood. You could base your design on that - just make the fingerboard flat and...
Wow... anyone care to take guess what it will actually go for?
