    I'm currently looking at an Epiphone that's made in Japan in the 80s under $200. Japan made some nice quality instruments, especially in the 80s.

    I'm changing the strings shortly to GHS Strings A240 Phosphor Bronze Mandolin Strings, Loop End, Ultra Light. Maybe this will help. I believe there is stock Ibanez strings on it now.

    I never played a mandolin before.
    It sems harder to fret for some reason than it is a guitar.. The action on my Ibanez 510e mando seems ok. Are most mandolins harder to fret than guitars.
