    Re: Squirrel of Possibility

I'm pretty sure there's music or tab somewhere here on the cafe. I learned how to play it awhile back, and if I remember correctly, that's how I learned.
  2. Re: Ordered new/used Breedlove FF today - can't wait

Congrats! You're going to love it.

I put a Cumberland Acoustics bridge and a Tone-Gard on my Quartz FF, and I, to this day, still think it's the best sounding mandolin I've ever played.
  3. Re: Looking for mando music with chordal melodies and variations

One of the best ways I've learned to play chord melodies has been by sitting down with my favorite recordings (not necessarily with, and often without mandolin content) and trying to play the vocal...
  4. Re: Acoustic Addicts -- Spectral analysis of woods and style

This could be really cool (not that it isn't already) with some more hardcore statistical analysis. Analyses of Variance and whatnot.
  5. South By Southwest (SXSW) Mando Content

    Howdy cafe-ers,

I'm in Austin all week for SXSW, and I was wondering:

Does anybody know of any good (preferably free) bluegrass shows going on this week? Or any genre with some good mando...

Re: Breaking out of a Slump. LH vs. RH

    Don't count yourself out yet!

At the advice of many people here, I bought the best mandolin I could afford comfortably (maybe not so comfortably in my case), and I couldn't be happier with it. I'm...

Re: Breaking out of a Slump. LH vs. RH

:)) I laugh at the anecdote remembering that I used to be that guy when I first started performing...

But you're right it kind of seems as if now I don't take in ANY visual stimuli when...

Re: Breaking out of a Slump. LH vs. RH

Hmm I didn't think about it that way. Maybe that whole "hand watching" thing is an extraneous variable. And me playing better last night was passing the plateau... Maybe I should have cherished the...

Re: Breaking out of a Slump. LH vs. RH

Definitely. I guess I should have mentioned that I got a similar positive result when I played with my eyes closed, or stared off into space, etc.

Breaking out of a Slump. LH vs. RH

    Howdy cafe-ers,

So recently I had been in a slump... To the point where I felt like I actually got worse. My playing had been sloppy and choppy, and basically just less fluid as a whole,...

    Re: coordination

Look for Mike Marshall's "Book of Fingerbusters"
It has all of the left and right hand coordination exercises you could dream of.

Just looked, and it's in stock at Elderly....

    Re: Where's the cafe?

    There's a "Mandola's Italian Cafe" in Austin....
    Does that count?

EDIT: just realized Caleb posted above that it used to be in Arlington, TX. Neat

    Re: Aging mandolins

95% of people report that they believe they're better than average drivers.
And something like 99.5% of people think they're better than average friends!

Re: Mandolin popularity: nadir or zenith?

I can't speak for the rest of the world, but bluegrass instrumentation (especially the banjo) is getting pretty popular here in Austin.

People who would have never associated with the genre are...

Re: Practice on more than one Instrumnet

Sorry for the double post, but I got caught up while typing.

My point in saying all of the above is that I don't think you have to specifically allot time for one instrument or the other....

Re: Practice on more than one Instrumnet

    Howdy, GuitarDogs!

I've been playing guitar, for 13 years, and just recently (6 months ago) started playing mandolin to improve my right hand technique.

So thats why I started... But Somewhere...

I went to go buy the book/music, and I can't find it anywhere. Completely sold out! And not available for months!

It wasn't released that long ago was it?

Is there any software along these same lines that is offered for free?
Or at the bare minimum, a free program that can cut temp while retaining pitch?

    Re: Breedlove

I'm the fellow who likes multidon's FF very much, and honestly (NFI) I can't speak highly enough of the quality of my Breedlove, ESPECIALLY at the price-point of the 2012's on sale right now.

Re: science behind a mandolin "opening up"

Right, I thought it sounded TERRIBLE in the de-humidified room.
And it's funny you mention cold, I've always thought my mandolin sounded more 'woody' when I take it out on the balcony in the cold....

Re: science behind a mandolin "opening up"

    Re: Student Looking for Mandolin!
