    Re: I'm buying a Mandolin

I'd recommend Eastman-I heard they have really upped their game since I played one like 10 years ago, Kentucky 900's are awesome or one of the many independent builders have eco models!

    Re: Vintage Gibson oval hole

I've thought about ripping my Virzi out of my 5 but its in there and I personally like the tone and volume, and thinking of originality it should stay. I get why people take them out but I'm in the...

    Re: Vintage Gibson oval hole

My early 25 Snake A-4 with Virzi falls into this-I'm on the fence about keeping it as its great but once you get used to the old F-5 power and cut its apples and oranges? Many dislike the Virzi's but...
  4. Re: My Pas Washburn Lyon and Healy mandolin

The smashed guitar story reminds me of my Grandpa Big Bill Smith-he was working a gig at a radio station or something and George Jones smashed a Herringbone Martin over Little Jimmie Dickins and my...
  5. Re: My Pas Washburn Lyon and Healy mandolin

Nice, I don't believe I've ever seen a wards label! Way neat for sure. Thanks for the info as I didn't know those were carved tops. Who had that book out on Gibson's budget brands? I need to pick...
  6. Re: My Pas Washburn Lyon and Healy mandolin

Nice L&H-I had a late teens, early 20's one just like it, low serial# that was pretty much mint, one piece back, and came in a "Baby Loar style case-looked just like an F-5 Loar case but smaller and...
  7. Re: Always surprised how people send stuff

I refuse to ever use UPS again, way too many damaged instruments came my way! But then some shippers even very well known dealers I've gotten stuff from I'm amazed it arrived in one piece! Actually...

    Re: Woodstock

I remember as kid in the early 90's when they played the Woodstock movie on TV a bunch and I thought it was great, I'm sure I annoyed my parents playing the Woodstock records over and over! Me being...

    Re: Jamie Wiens Mandolins

Not sure I asked the consigner if it sold-he don't think so so maybe he was able to pull it? Don't know till he gets back with me as I'm promised it for some goods I have? We'll see?

I didn't get it? Not that I know of anyway unless the consigner picked it up but I don't think so?

    Re: The Pick Guy

I've bought some of his picks! Mighty fine stuff and one only gets that tone with the "real thing!" His prices are very good for what you get also!

    Re: Silk and Steel Strings?

I've used them on my old and new F-5's, it warms the sound up, I prefer D'Addario strings for their brightness! I'm in love with the EJM74's-the Monel throwback strings-they be awesome! Or you can't...

Re: what is the best selling mandolin.

I'd have to say the very nice cheaper imports like Eastman, Kentucky, Rogue, etc...Some models are a great bang for the buck with a good set-up and better hardware!
  20. Re: Alex Heflin on the Eastman ER-M mandolin

That Eastman sounds great, I didn't know they made E-mandolins? I've thought about adding one to the stable? A friend has an E-mando by a maker called Mann-I think anyway, its pretty snazzy!
  21. Re: people who have Gibson jam master mandolins.

Thanks, I thought they were the same models-well they are pretty close, but different specs-sounds great for a no frills F or A-5!
  22. Re: people who have Gibson jam master mandolins.

Are the "Jam Masters" the 9 series of Gibson's like the A model-A-9, or the F model-F-9?

    Re: Disappointment

I've walked away from numerous instruments! One was a 37 Gibson F-5, the dealer for one wanted way too much, it was in serious need of a neck reset, I offered 3 really good mandolins as trade or...
