  2. Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

Can't speak to the "women more busier with child rearing responsibilities" thing as I don't have kids, but when I put down the mandolin for a couple of years it was due to 1) starting a small...

    Re: Describe your MAS progression

    My list and my story:

    1) Briefly had a Jimmy Moon AE flat top mandolin back in Ireland, but sold it a few months later as I was moving to the States.

    2) A couple of months after my arrival in...

Re: How much do you practice?

I started playing mandolin in Jan 2009, but I'd already been playing the tenor banjo since 2007 and guitar since I was a kid. I play/practice for 2 hours a day, usually switching off with tenor banjo...
  6. Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

Anecdotal and also specific to playing irish trad music on the mandolin, but I've attended two of Marla Fibish's Winter Intensive workshops and the attendees were a pretty even split between male and...

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

Not everyone uses thick picks - I use a Blue Chip Kenny Smith 35, which is about .89mm thick and quite small. I've also used larger Blue Chip TPR35 picks but always go back to the smaller Kenny Smith...

    Re: New Member Old Questions

I'm a fan of Eastman mandolins as regards bang for your buck, but I wouldn't describe them as having a chunky neck, so that may rule them out of the running for you.

    Re: Irish Metronome

You say that you have a "nice solid rhythm" when playing jigs but that they're "flat" - I'm not sure that a metronome, no matter what it's capabilities are, will address that. Feel and lift doesn't...

    Re: One Mandolin - forever...

I only have one mandolin, my Girouard, and it's not going anywhere -it's all I want and need in a mandolin. Plus the inlay on the peghead is of my Beagle Janey Mack!

    Re: Shipping: how much???

Glad to hear something worked out! I sold a mandolin case a couple of years ago and it ended up costing me the same amount I'd sold it for to ship it via USPS to the buyer so I made zero profit - oh...

Re: Looking For A Decent A Style w/Oval

Re: Looking For A Decent A Style w/Oval

Another one to consider would be the Eastman 304 - The Mandolin Store lists one for $510, and coming from them you would know that it would be well set up:

  20. Re: Ye Vagabonds live in Whelans during lockdown

Just saw a post on Facebook that Other Voices (who put on the gig as part of their "Courage" series of lockdown performances) were only leaving the video of the live feed up until 10pm last night.
  21. Re: Ye Vagabonds live in Whelans during lockdown

Watched it live yesterday, great stuff altogether - then had to go back and listen to their last album again last night. Here's another great watch:
  22. Re: Practice Schedules for Multi-Instrumentalists

I switch back and forth between the mandolin and tenor banjo every other day, works fine for me. The guitar gets played a couple of times a week.

  24. Re: Update on "The Irish Mandolin" - and other stories

I've made decent progress with my recovery, but then of course the virus restrictions came into play, so we've been "sheltering in place" here in San Francisco for over a month now. Planning to get...
  25. Re: Update on "The Irish Mandolin" - and other stories

What an absolutely LOVELY tune! I could hear that as part of a sound track to a short documentary film of some sort, great stuff!
