Re: English fiddling essay (no mando)

I'm wary of the labels applied to types of music. Many genres are named by outsiders, often record producers and promoters who want merchants to know where to put a recording for sale in their...

Re: English fiddling essay (no mando)

David Shepherd does a good workshop on English regional fiddling styles if anyone ever gets a chance I'd highly recommend going along to one.
He does a lot of French regional examples too, really...

A local folksinging English immigrant said about fifteen years ago: I'm an English man singing English songs in the English language in an English style, with nothing Celtic about me. If someone...

Re: Good tone on long chords?

    The tips are pretty basic.

    1. Keep your arm, shoulder, hand, wrist & fingers as relaxed as possible.
    2. Place your fingertips very near the active fret - not in the middle between two frets, but...

Re: Good tone on long chords?

Well for me Max I don't really do anything different chords or single notes, tone wise. I keep my BC picks, w/ speed bevel, at about 30 degrees to the strings and pretty shallow depending on desired...

These sheets are from mandozine. They are sort of similar to ffcp for chords. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Re: Help! Drowned out by fiddles!

According to the OP (which no one reads after a while :whistling: ), that's not in the lineup. Don't give them ideas! :disbelief:

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

Beyond tip shape, I find both material and weight affect pick noise and tone. To me, it's more noticeable on guitar than mandolin, but heavier picks tend to be quieter in terms of noise and stronger...

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

It is, if you want it to be. When I first asked advice here on buying a good mandolin, the first/wisest questions were about what I wanted it to sound like.
I have an assortment of picks and do...

    Re: Losing Your Place

A lot of great tips here.

Speaking for myself, I am a very good reader, but no matter how many times I play through a piece just reading from the page, it does not store in my memory. I play in a...

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

Pick noise should be recognised as the result of an excited sound board loosing its energy. The motion of a pick thru a string not only exites the string, it also excites the pick and both loose...
  16. Re: What song, Album, Musician changed your perspective on music?

Good picks, I must say. Saw Sugarcane once when he was playing in John Mayall's USA Union lineup (the prime reason for driving down to Tampa for the concert). Like John Cipollina (Quicksilver...

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

I started with the CT-55 and have slowly gotten rounder and rounder. Now I'm using the E shape from Apollo Picks (similar to the SR from BC).
I also like the new rounded Clown Barf ones from Golden...

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

When I first ventured into Blue Chip picks, I order a couple with the 1-R option so I have the rounded corner as an option. I found the sound so muted that I never really adapted to using the round...

    ^^YES^^

Worth mentioning, if you have a pointier pick and want to experience the feel and tone of a rounder pick, you can always turn the pick over and hold it by the point.

I've just started experimenting with rounder picks, about two weeks ago. What I read is that the rounder picks let you hear more of the note/instrument where the pointier ones let you hear more pick....

    Re: Really good tremelo exercises?

I don't think you're going to find any tremolo exercise very exciting. It's the mandolin's version of long tone exercises that must be suffered by bowed strings and wind players. I do think that...

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

The rounded picks don't seem to "pluck" the string as much as a pointed one. I prefer the feel of plucking the string. Also the smaller pointed tip allows for more precision and control over the...

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

If you want to glide thru the strings while doing a tremolo, angle your pick. The more you angle the quieter you are, even with more force. Learning tremolo most folks need more force and angling the...
