    Re: Subscription Setting

    Thanks, Scott:
My Default Thread Subscription Mode was set to Instantly, Using Email. I assume you are saying I should keep it that way?

I figured out the way to bulk delete subscriptions to...

    Subscription Setting

I have quite a few subscriptions and I believe that once I post on a thread it automatically subscribes. Then I get a notification when someone posts. In that email it says:

    However recently I...

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

I was thinking that most dealers would opt for offering a consignment arrangement rather than buying outright unless it was a collection of significant instruments or some that conform to their...
  4. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

I would imagine that there are quite a few Chinese instrument factories that supply import instruments for branding. Same with violins. My violin guy here told me that he shopped around to find a...

    What? No lobster rolls?
  6. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

I wonder if the Alabama and older Gold Tone with the pick-shaped soundhole might be made by the same Chinese(?) Shop?
  7. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

Looks like an import from Asia. Here's a 10 year old thread. I think the brand is mostly sold in Canada.

    Re: No motivation

We have been getting together with a few folks at a time and playing with social distancing on our patios and decks. Of course, here in the northeast when the weather gets colder it will be a lot...

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

I agree with pops. The classified ads here are safest and you have a community of people who are interested in mandolins. In addition, Scott and his staff are very vigilant in making this a safe...
  10. Re: Need a soft case for an oddly-shaped octave mandolin

Guitar gig bag. Go to one of the MC sponsors and talk to someone with instrument and tape measure in hand. Might not be snug but you can always use towels to pad it.

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

I really think that most of these Gibsons if they are in good shape will not be parted out unless someone gets it for seriously low money. There is a black A-4 from 1911 on reverb now priced at...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I did download a lot of the pieces labeled with Japanese characters figuring they might have some use. I seem to recall that some were handwritten arrangements it transcriptions of music possibly...

Also, be aware that all the compositions of Raffaele Calace are freely available on the FMI site.

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I was wondering, Martin, about what, if anything was added. I, too, downloaded the whole site before it was removed. I will have to check the new reincarnation.

Re: Cracks between ribs on bowlback

I agree with Eugene. And fluted ribs puts it in the higher end. The insides of these were often lined with wood shavings so you may be seeing that with the second photo. You might look inside with a...

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

Look inside the sound hole. There should be a stamped number inside on the neck block. That is the FON. There should also be a serial number on the label if there is one although sometimes they get...
  18. Re: 1st Mandolin. Purchase Nice Bandolim or Eastman MD505? TYIA

Who is the Brazilian luthier you are considering? In addition to shipping costs you also have to factor in US Custom charges age dealing with CITES regulations depending on the woods this luthier...
  19. Re: 1st Mandolin. Purchase Nice Bandolim or Eastman MD505? TYIA

There are members here who play both of the makers above as their main instruments. I think Tom Wright plays a Buchanan 10-string.

Re: ID help for this mystery machine please

No confusion. That is our MC member Martin Jonas playing a recent American made mandolin by a company currently called Big Muddy.

Re: ID help for this mystery machine please

I agree with the folks who commented already. It does bear resemblance to some lower-end Levin (Swedish) mandolins from the 1940s-50s, but they didn't make this one.
  22. Re: 1st Mandolin. Purchase Nice Bandolim or Eastman MD505? TYIA

If you are mostly interested in choro and you have the cash for a custom instrument the bandolims are quite nice though very different from more standard American-style mandolins. They use lighter...
  23. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

I had one of these, probably made by L&H, lovely inlay, but price is astronomical. About 4 or 5% of that price would be optimistic. Granted, it does look like it is in excellent condition, but...
  24. Re: Possible bargain 30's Strad-O-Lin near Bend, OR

Fake grain on the back. I would guess lower end model possibly laminated but also possibly not. Might be worth a shot at that price.
