    Re: Sight read tab?

I am pretty good at sight reading notation for mandolin or fiddle (at tempo). I'm a lot slower on guitar. I'll confess I never spent any time with tablature.

Re: Help me narrow down my search

I only made it through the first 3 pages in the classifieds here before I found several F style Northfields and a couple Collings in the $5 k and under range. Not to mention vintage Gibson's as well.

    Re: Replacement Tuner Buttons

The Amazon ebony buttons arrived from China. They didn’t quite fit so I spent some time with a drill and tiny file. Here are a couple pics of side by side ebony and pearloid:

    Re: Octave pairings?

I didn't know that term for it but its also how I've strung my 10 string mandola, OM and 10 string mandocello. These instruments I have all use a zero fret so the nut slots can accomodate a variety...

    Re: Octave pairings?

That's what I do. My OM has an Allen tailpiece that takes ball end strings, and I use octave pairs on the G, D and A courses. I make up custom sets from individual guitar strings. I've got flat...

    Re: Octave pairings?

This is dead simple, two ways.

    1. To tune an octave higher, halve the diameter. So your octave G would be .023 and the octave D is .016.

    2. Even easier, use a spare A tuned to an octave G....

    Re: Replacement Tuner Buttons

The buttons are only slightly looser when slipping over the shaft. Once the button screw is hand tight the tuners function just as before. I never epoxy anything that's meant to be removable (and...
  9. Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations

Netflix has a bunch that I've enjoyed - Running Down a Dream (Tom Petty), The Other One (Bob Weir), Tricky Dick and the Man in Black, No Direction Home and Rolling Thunder (both Dylan), Twenty Feet...

    Re: Replacement Tuner Buttons

And now for the mini Gotoh buttons. I bought these regular guitar sized ebony buttons for Gotoh tuners and put them on my Morris. They fit perfectly but are just too big:

    Re: Replacement Tuner Buttons

The mini-Grover ebony buttons arrived today. Original pearloid buttons:
    188004
    188005

    New ebony buttons:
    188006
    188007

    Part number - 188008
This is much more preferable to me. I’ll post...
  12. Re: How do I raise the nut height on a banjolin

What's the action up at the 12th fret? On my 1930's Stahl banjolin I needed a new bridge, reset the neck dowel and shimmed the neck off the pot to get the right action. Nut was fine.

    That said,...

Re: Replacing Tuners on 1930's Mandos

Here’s the old Regal with the StewMac “Golden Age” tuners. I like the look and they work much better than the original ones.

  14. Re: Article: Martin Howley's Mandolin Journey with We Banjo 3

These guys were SO GOOOOOD at last Wintergrass. I had not heard them before. They put on the best show of anyone there (in my opinion, of course). Tremendous energy and musicianship.
  15. Re: Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

I'm also not into bling. As an old Harley rider who eschews chrome, I like the old school saying "chrome don't getcha home."
  16. Re: Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

I started out, like many did, without knowing much at all about mandolins. With experience I learned what I liked and didn't like in tone, playability and looks (in that order). So when it came...
  17. Re: Ideas for what could be rattling on Mandolin!

I just had a rattle on one of the D's on my octave mandolin. It was a slightly loose tuner button screw.
  18. Re: Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

Back to binding - I get that using wood is more difficult, thus more costly. But why not nicer colors if we are stuck with plastic? I've seen some nice tortoise shell looking binding, dark brown,...
  19. Re: Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

One of my highlights every year at Wintergrass for the past many years has been to admire and play Andrew's (and Austin Clark's) amazing craftsmanship.

But I'm more than satisfied with my less...

Re: Replacing Tuners on 1930's Mandos

Yes it occurs to me just to have more windings between the first wrap and the roller hole. I've always used 3 wraps from bottom up (for wound strings; 5 for plain) then wild end through the hole,...

Re: Replacing Tuners on 1930's Mandos

Received the Stew-Mac Golden age tuners today. I like the look and feel. II appears they will fit fine just requiring new mounting holes (old ones should be covered up) and of course drill out for...
  22. Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

Its possible I'm the only one who thinks this way.

Most of the instruments I own, certainly my main players, feature natural finish, maple wooden binding and wooden (or at least dark plastic/horn)...
  23. Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?

I heard the band "Milkdrive" a few years ago live at my neighborhood Thai place. They just blew me away with an awesome rock/ newgrass/jazz sound. I don't think they're together anymore, and they...

A new question related to the original one:

Are mini-tuner shafts and the corresponding hole in the buttons typically the same dimensions as their full-size brethren? That is, do Grover...

    Re: Replacement Tuner Buttons

So a little more info on this old thread. A few months ago I got a hold of some Gotoh ebony buttons from Luthier's Merc and they fit the Morris F4 (square, 0.124" (~3.17 mm) across both sets of...
