Re: Help me narrow down my search

You may want to think about old Gibson A models. There are many in your price range. Depending on what type of music you play, they are nice and sound good. Only issue is they are not great for...

Re: Calton Cases - in pictures

Maplebaby, thanks, I did that myself, with some help from and old Bluegrass Unlimited magazine, a copy machine and an old fashioned projector. I made a transparency of the logo, projected it onto my...

    Re: What's the real difference?

Bill got it right, the workmanship is much better and, usually, they sound much better. Also, in my experience, you grow out of a cheapo so it makes more sense to invest a little more in the...

    Re: Need mandolin recommendations a-style

I have had good luck with some old teens Gibson A's. A lot of them are in your price range. I think they have a great mellow tone and are just neat.

I switched to Elixir Nan Web strings....they last about 4 times longer than the D'Addaios I had been using.

  10. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

It actually was by default. In the mid 70's I joined a band with three guitar players, and guess what I played? Well, I bought a cheapo mandolin and have been hooked ever since. No regrets.

    Re: String recommendations

I used to use the J74's all the time until I discovered Elixir Nano Web mediums. I use them for both guitar and mandolins. The sound is great and they last much longer than other strings. Good...

Good job. I agree with Lucas, it needs some back up harmony. Keep going.

    Re: "Brain Flatulence" when playing

Been there, done that. My only solution is practice, practice, practice. Even then I occasionally have the problem. Oh well, I guess I'm old.

Get the nano web ones, they last a long time.
  19. Re: Buying my first Mandolin- Equipment questions

Listen to Kevin. I made the mistake of taking all of the strings off the first time I restrung a mandolin. It can be a real problem. Good luck and have fun.
  20. Re: Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar (The Delmore Brothers)

There's a good book, "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction", edited by Charles Wolfe that is the autobiography of Alton Delmore. Fun, informative and interesting. It was published in 1977 by The Country...
