  1. Re: Here's why you are an amazing mandolin picker but still dumb

"Belief" is overrated. Just look at the mess it creates ~o)
    .....

Science has not proven the "efficacies" of music (in this context)? Why am I not surprised.. ;)

    Re: Banjo evil (nmc)

Ya gigs/venues typically determine what gets brung/brought/bringed. Back when I was drumming, I'd challenge your Honda for "near-ideal musician's car" with my minivan...often thought unstylish by...

Maybe it goes without saying, but.. As all the examples show, lots of folks employ all manner of styles in solo mndln. As you build a solo repertoire and performing experience, it may aide to...

    Re: Banjo evil (nmc)

I've posted some things I play. Albeit just recordings from my phone. I'm not set up for much more.

What are you all playing/how do you get round to gigs? Do you manage to get all those...

    Re: Playing Solo..

Well I wouldn't exactly call BG, country, blues/jazz mucus! ;)

I've done a bit of it, but I soon went to banjo instead (tenor and eventually plectrum) for more dynamic range. Also, I liked bnj...

    Re: Banjo evil (nmc)

No Jim, that's all just master stuff I find highly inspiring.

For myself, about all I can manage these days with any regularity is twiddling my fingers on a box, harp, or hardingfele. Although I...

    Re: Banjo evil (nmc)

Ya makes much more sense to play a moothie/blues harp. It's a lot of fun to pick a banjer and blow on a moothie in a rack..

I enjoy performing with HD, and it always goes over well, but ya if...

    Re: Banjo evil (nmc)

I hit "old age" in my 50s - and decided years ago to quit schlepping gear. I didn't mind doing it when I was working - out for the evening (til 2 am) - but child-rearing put the kibosh on that. Now...

Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

Lap steel. Sometimes the cats get a little crazy - I find it best to just put my ears to the wheel and go with the flow. Steel lets me get those notes between B# and Cb.

My poor wife. Over the holidays I was on an oud kick - playing trance/EDM on my son's synth. I was about to go off the deep end again and start collecting synth gear again...

    Banjo evil (nmc)

So ya these are desperate times.. AND it's not a full moon yet, but it illuminates the ground and sky here tonight, and Ive found the last container of holiday spinach dip and beer, they're playing...

Re: What if I bought the wrong instrument?

Well, if you did, at least you're quite close to your target.

I'm afraid I feel on the verge of doing something crazy and buying a banjo. Either that or a synth. These are desperate times. I...

  14. Re: Looking for Schottis Fran Mulang sheet music

That's so different than the version I know. I'll post a clip of it in a day or two - I'm stuck in a hotel room for the next 3 days, but at least I've got my fiddle with me!
  15. Re: Looking for Schottis Fran Mulang sheet music

There's a schottis fran mulang in the Vicki Swan folio. It must be a different piece.? Is that a version you're speaking of, Eric?

    Re: Harp...anyone?

Yes. I spent several years, from 2012 I guess, fairly immersed in the old Gaelic forms (airs, pibroch..). I play some tunes too, but having started late, my chops aren't what they are on...

Here's another Halling rhythm - Norwegian hardingfele - similar melody to the one above

  25. Re: Nordic/Finnish/Swedish folk music recommendation

I wonder about that - the Ilkka Kolehmainen piece. If folk revival stuff was as "popular" as they say it once was, isn't it just as so now? Or are they conflating modernity, rock, EDM et al with...
