    Re: Problem E strings

As you may know, the plain steel strings (A's and E's) are pretty much all the same metallurgically regardless of the brand or type of string. About all you can do is go to a heavier gage after the...

  3. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

I started violin at 10 years old. Started bluegrass fiddle, electric bass and acoustic guitar at 13. I became more than competent at these over the years.

I didn't start mandolin till I was in...

Re: Replacing Tuners on 1930's Mandos

Still considering replacing these old tuners. They are both A style, worm under with standard 29/32" post spacing. The Stew-Mac Golden Age tuners (with 29/32" spacing, NOT the Golden Age...

Re: Arm rest. Y or N?

I have bought or made arm rests for every banjo, mando family instrument and guitar I have except for my new HD-28. I find a nice smooth arm rest is much more comfortable than the instrument's edge....

    Re: Humidity

Yes. Wood absorbs moisture from the air and expands. I don't think 81 F and 78% RH will damage it. The only way to bring things back to "normal" (~76 F and 45% RH) is with air conditioning.

    Re: Weber Bitterroot Cedar Top

I have 2 western red cedar mandolins - a Morris hybrid F4 with a single transverse brace and a Cricketfiddle (Tom TJ Jessen) F5. Both are plenty loud, warm and sweet and have lots of sustain.

    I...

Re: Comfy in our new RV

As I originally posted, 2021 will be our 25th maintenance and refueling outage. Half of my summer will be spent working 12 hours every day, 6 days every week. I'll miss most of the festivals.

    Re: Octave Mandolin Tips

See if you can find lessons online from Sarah Jarosz or Sierra Hull. Both women are fantastic OM players and Sierra at least has pretty small hands.

    Also look at stretching/flexibility exercises....

Re: Comfy in our new RV

Pulling my old '87 Airstream to bluegrass (or gypsy jazz) festivals is just about my favorite thing. Every odd year (2015, 2017, 2019, etc.) I spend all of May, June and part of July working 6 days...
  12. No mandolin content: Question about finish on Martin Guitar Neck

I posted this on a guitar forum, but got absolutely no response. So I'm trying here as there are a few guitar players on the cafe.

I bought a mint condition HD-28 right before everything shut...

    Re: Blue chip picks

I'm in the minority regarding Bluechip. I have bunches of picks made of all kinds of materials, ranging in thickness from about 1.00 mm up to 3.00 mm.

I frequently run through them to see if my...

I have 4 mandolin family instruments with cast Allen tailpieces. I really like how sturdy and simple they are, plus allow using ball or loop end strings.

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

Ummm, that's a very thin pick. To most (for mandolin at least) 1.0 mm is thin pick. 1.5 mm is medium. 2.0 mm and up is where thick starts.

  25. Re: Advice needed on K&K mandolin twin pickup install
