    Re: Caterina Lichtenberg‘s On-line course

You mean the artist works one?

    I am a subscriber.

While has some intro material, it pretty much assumes you can read music and have some facility with mandolin already.

    It's strengths...

    Re: Acoustic pedal

My plan is to use it to temporarily get an acoustic tenor guitar sound from my electric, while I wait 7 months for my acoustic to be built.

My debut as a tenor guitar player

Played my electric 4-string (CGDA) in our worship band this morning. Did mostly basic lead-guitar-style stuff, and it wasn't terrible.

I used a PRS Archon Clean amp sim in the HX Stomp to get the...

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

I have an electric (Eastwood Airline Mandola, 18" scale), that I converted to a tenor GDAE, strings are 13.5p, 22w, 33w, 52w (thats about 15 lbs per string). It is everything I could have hoped for...

    Fixing a microphonic pickup

So I have two eastwood airline mandolas, which came with what I learned are called 'microphonic' pickups. This is a new term for me, never knew what it was until I got one by accident. Basically,...

    Re: Beware EVOs

Did the fret height change? Altering string height can change tone, and some instruments are more sensitive to this than others. Low frets in particular can mute or darken the tone slightly...
  8. Re: Question for notation-reading CGDAE-instrument players

B is easiest, then A. I am used to 8vb starting below low G. All are legit.

Re: String gauges for GDAE on electric tenor

To me its about starting with a string tension you like and then adjusting for string balance as needed.

If you want to bend, go lighter, if not, heavier may be your thing.

    I lean towards the...

Thile quote on resting hand on the bridge

I thought I was an oddball for resting the heel of my hand on the bridge of my mando. Many mando technique videos recommend against this or the pinky plant.

"My wrist – or rather the heel of my...
  12. Re: I missed my Schmaltz! (or: virtuoso violin music on a 4-strin

I ordered a Yamaha AV7, used for $1100 from fiddlershop. Reading about violins, and the lack of responsiveness in the cheaper models, I opted to splurge a little, 45 day return policy helped too. I...
  13. Re: Small speakers revisited, and we have a new winner: Sony XB-2

FYI, Vacay was a success. I ended up using a zoom pedal directly connected to the speaker (1/4 mono to 1/8 stereo cable). Even with the impedance mismatch it sounded great.

    I took the emandola...

Re: About done upgrading my MD315

I'm gonna go with bone nut for improved string spacing, CA bridge for improved sound, and taller frets for improved playability.

Mandovoodoo could be worth considering too for more sound...

    Re: OM String recommendations

I put flatwounds on my TC OM. It made it sound a lot like a guitar, but still richer because of the chorus effect. I really liked that sound, so I would suggest at least try flats once.

    I...
  18. Re: Small speakers revisited, and we have a new winner: Sony XB-2

If you have a sub, and are willing to tune it for flat, it could be ok, the clarity is there. But I wouldn't normally mix into something like a Bose or a THR. They may sound great, but don't know...
  19. Small speakers revisited, and we have a new winner: Sony XB-20

Tried Bose soundlink mini, Marshal MS-2, XS Hive 2, and lastly (out of desperation or dogged determination) a Sony XB-20.

Here are the reviews so you guys don't have to spend money like I did:

  20. I can't do it, Mandola to OM, love the mandola sound

Bought an Airline E-mandola, planning to convert to an OM, but I love it as an e-mandola.

It will definitely get converted to a four string, but I can't bring myself to tune it down another...

  24. Re: Has anyone tried flatwound strings on a Pono octave mandolin?

I tried D'Addario flatwounds on my trinity college OM (20" scale), it sounded great with them for me.

    Tools that you use.

I am only a user, and focus on what I need to do a good setup, this includes making new nuts for string spacing. The only other job I do is installing pickups.

These are the tools that are vital...
