Hi,
yes plenty of trees in your part of the world. There are different varieties of Maple so you may have to do some research as to which is best for the job.

I think Maple is the best bet. Fender use it on electrics and it looks very nice.
Kevin Dempsey the Guitarist is still going strong, but Martin Jenkins and Swarb left the party early. Kev's a great Guitarist and an old mate from Coventry. Both Guitar and Mandocello were made by...
I bought one from JJ Ryan in Glasgow, it's really excellent. https://www.jjryanmandolins.co.uk
It's got a strong modern neck with a trussrod now but I'll follow your advice, lighten up the G and D and see how it sounds. Thanks for the information.
Thanks Bob. I've gone back to a 10 on the E and tightened the skin and it sounds better. I might even risk putting some more strings on one day. Doubling up the A and E would balance the sound a bit...
I've just put a modern neck on a 20's Banjolin which was really hard to play & tune. Also given it a modern skin.
I've set it up for four strings at the moment.
The strings I have on are...
I think the Collings just turned up on Ebay UK for £2,495.
It lives in a Mandola gig bag at the moment but a hard case would be great. Did anyone ever find a case that fits ?
My guess is that someone stripped the varnish to make it sound better & applied stain - which didn't sink in evenly as they didn't get all the varnish off. Probably put French polish over the top. It...
I switched from Octave to Tenor Banjo. The stretches are the same but it's much easier to press the string down.
I’ve re- activated my Reverb listings now, you should be able to find my Reverb shop under “Davey’s Mandolin Shack” or search for Gibson A5 L. I’ll list it on the Cafe when I get home & do a...
Hi. I have a mint Gibson A5L if that might suit you. I’m on holiday for another week, then I’ll list it on Reverb and the Cafe. Based near Manchester. Cheers. David
Good tune Bill, I didn’t know it. I’ll learn it now though, sounds like a good one for pub sessions.
I got a text file instead of an mp3. Any other way to send it ?
Another vote for Paul Shippey in Weston-super-Mare. I have a Tone, carved top and back, plus an Axe, flat top carved back. Both have Cedar tops and Maple back and sides. Just great Mandolins. ...
Hello, I sent you a personal message as I have a couple for sale.
I've dressed the frets now and they're okay. I also re-ebonised the fretboard which I had rubbed down with wire wool. I made a couple of bridges today and fitted an all Maple one which plays very...
It's 15 inch scale length. It came with 10 to 34 strings tuned GDAE & it didn't feel that heavy though the action was a little high on the bass side. I would have preferred an unrepaired tailpiece...
Hi, yes it may be bone, my Antique Dealer friend said it was Ivory. The Biscuit "feels" right and it's very carefully made.
It's an early Instrument, serial number 184, so maybe it's an odd...
Hi Folks,
just acquired this nice little Instrument. I've had quite a few Guitars over the years but this is the first Mandolin. It has the usual cracked tailpiece but someone has brazed a chunk...
I bought a Kalamazoo KM21 last year, which is a sister model to yours but much the same. It surprised me what a good sound it has, different to my main modern Mandolin but a sweet and ringing tone...
If that’s Sheesham Wood, it’s a variety of Indian Rosewood & generally used for furniture. We’ve seen them using it to build beach shacks in Goa so it must be fairly plentiful.
Fiddle and Mandolin have four strings & are tuned the same so "fiddle tunes" can always be played on Mandolin.
I had Elixir strings on the G and D (36 and 24) which I replaced with Daddarios and the sound is much more solid.
I found a piece of firestripe so I made it another Pickguard and I'll save the...
