Re: What is this wood figuring called?

I had an Engelmann Heiden that had that figure in spades. Michael said it was perfectly quartered. Figured top, back, and sides.

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

Thanks, I've been enjoying it since Sept 25, so not a month old yet. Still a growing young 'un.

Here's a little sample of #37. The tune is "Monroe's Farewell to Longhollow."

    Re: Anyone taking online lessons?

If you're a beginner, I'd recommend a Skype lesson. I see beginners on ArtistWorks who have pick direction problems and practice that way for a couple weeks (or more if Mike's on tour) while waiting...

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

The Ruhland neck is custom. Matt used a mandolin I used to own that now lives in Portland as a template and then modified the neck it to be a little less deep. The Ruhland neck turned out slightly...

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

I went with the old bridge sitka--Matt seems to really like how that wood works for mandolins.

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

The Heiden is 9 years old and has a more complex and mature voice. Really not a fair comparison. The Ruhland's really amazing for brand new and has a lot going for it already. I think it needs some...

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

#37 arrived a week ago. Enjoying getting to know it and what it has to offer which is a lot. My Heiden is jealous right now. Will make a recording whenever I get some time--it already inspired a new...

Re: 2019 Monroe Camp Sept 18-22 Roll Call

Fabulous camp! I plan on going every year. So much fun and lots of great people. Really enjoyed David Davis's classes, and Compton's and really every one I went to. Fine jams every night. Luthier...
  10. Re: Did you catch the Ken Burns Country Music series opening?

Did you catch the Carter family got $1000/month in recording royalties in 1929? That's serious money--a lot of musicians would be thrilled to clear $1000 a month in record sales today.

    Re: What's up with USPS?

I always ship mandolins by USPS Priority 2 Day Express. It's guaranteed to get there in 2 days or you get a refund of the shipping cost. They are more highly motivated to get it there in 2 days, and...

Re: Tascam DR-05 vs Zoom H2N

I think the Zoom wins for recording in a circle since it has mics on both sides. It can also be a USB microphone if you want to get into multi-tracking on your computer.

    Re: DYN-M Preamp

While it's discontinued, the Zoom A3 has an XLR input along with 1/4" input with a switch to select between mic, piezo, or magnetic pickups. It's got some decent EQ and effects (mic modeling,...

  21. Re: NimbleFingers, Michael Heiden, and a Kimble

Yes they are both great people, and I bet Tai nailed it. Salt Spring gets played a lot in the campground at festivals in Colorado. Great tune.

Your playing is even more impressive than your stack of firewood! Thanks for sharing this music with us and your experience that led to it.
  24. Re: NimbleFingers, Michael Heiden, and a Kimble

Michael's setups are the best I've ever played. Thanks for all the photos of Michael's shop. That pic of Tai with John and David is so great!
  25. Re: Hypothetical high dollar mando purchase question...

Good luck with the search. Anything in that price range in an A5 should be spectacular.
