    Re: Improvising

At least some of the melody notes are in the chord tones. I typically follow the chord progression around, and try to find the melody notes in the chord patterns around the neck. I cant improvise...

Re: Eastman Bag - The Mandolin Store

I got one too - nicely padded and with backpack straps. A great deal at 15 bucks!

    Re: Temperance..... Jig!?!?

You were playing pretty fast - one thing that could improve clarity would be to slow down just a bit. I know I have to rein myself in sometimes with fiddle tunes - my brain wants me to play really...

    Re: Temperance..... Jig!?!?

Nice tune - and great playing!! Your tone in general is fine - I think you were probably a little nervous because you knew you were being recorded :)

I have heard Sheldon use it (snazzy that is) :)
  6. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

I heard a mandola in a band at a recent concert. I thought I wanted one, so I went and tried one out in a local store. The feel and sustain was great, but it seems like the it is limited key-wise...

Re: what is the best selling mandolin

Many years ago (yes before The Loar and before Eastmans were popular), MK was the darling of the affordable mando here on the Cafe. Lots of recommendations and accolades. I have never had a...

    Re: Sounds descriptions

I think of woody as related to the sound of hitting 2 sticks together. That characteristic sound of wood. Playing mandolin is clearly not the same as banging the top with a stick, but you can get...

    Re: My Pava

That instrument sounds fantastic, and I like the tunes you are picking, but I didn't recognize them. I notice you are mostly using pick downstrokes. Was that intentional to get the particular sound...
  10. Re: Help with playing the Ballad of St. Anne's reel

Wow.. interesting. I'm just learning this reel and I play it in D (I've never heard the ballad before). In this video, the first couple of times the fiddle player plays the reel, he plays in G -...

Re: My KM 1050 vs other Mandos

I hear a huge difference also between the MK and the Kentucky - The Kentucky is much fuller. And, on the chop the Kentucky kills the Strad.

    Re: Tonegards

I have used one for years and I think it makes a difference. Plus it looks cool. The main complication for me is that it makes a really tight fit in the case.

    Re: Silverangel Econo A #446

I'm not surprised that you liked the Primetone 1.5mm. I have been through many pick types (as I'm sure many of us have). On my Collings, the Primetone was too bright for me, but the Collings tends...

    Re: Silverangel Econo A #446

I recommend trying several different pick shapes, materials. And thicknesses. It seems like every mandolin is a bit different in what it takes to coax the best sound out. If you like the overall...

Re: String journey on a Collings MT

I have only ever used J74’s on my MT. I have, however, noticed a big sound difference with different picks. I get a nice dark woofy tone with a Proplec.

Re: Best live gig setup for mandolin/guitar

How about an sm57 microphone instead of pickups? Easy to swap between instruments. My band uses them for live performances when we have to amplify.
