Re: Did Bill Collings Sign All Or Some?

Yes. I'd be happy enough with the mandolin.

Re: Did Bill Collings Sign All Or Some?

I personally would not want a signature by anybody that did not have a primary role in building the instrument. Gilchrist, Dudenbostel, Heiden et. al. means something.

Re: Dave Olney rests in peace

When I was much younger, a customer of mine needed to do business earlier than usual because he was going to a friend’s wake. I said I was sorry to hear of it, but he said no, he was 84, hit a drive...
  4. Re: Installing a K&K internal with a James tailpiece

You would think that James and other tailpiece makers would have an enlarged hole as an option.

    Re: Introducing the Sorensen VX

That would be a very hard choice for me. I’m a sucker for one piece backs.
  6. Re: “one announcement we're privy to that will rock the industry”

There is a real need for a good sounding electric mandolin. Think of all the utility touring pros who aren’t the focus of attention, but need to sound good. Once players are seen on stages, and a few...
  7. Re: Sunday picking sessions at my house are keeping me alive...

It takes some effort and persistence and a whole lot of luck to find people that fit your own musical goals. I fear my finding two or three others that share my vision of writing original material,...

    Re: 2020 NAMM Show Report

I’m not a total Neanderthal, but the thought of a wave of 12 year old girls leaving me in their dust is just too depressing to contemplate, so I’ll crawl back into my hole until further notice.

Re: Sold my Collings and got a Pava

Collings is brighter, Pava is warmer. I think Pava for at home and a Collings to play with others. It’s as hard as picking an ice cream flavor. But just like ice cream, there is always another flavor.
  10. Re: What was your biggest challenge in making an F style mandolin

I’ve built one mandolin, and working on number two. Only by doing this can you truly understand. I was once one of those misguided souls. No more. Now I’d pay willingly and only lack the funds.

    Re: Looking for help

I would think any builder could make you a mandolin with a neck just like you want. Might be easier than finding one.

Now I can expand my delusion to cover the Norteast too. Next someone’s going to tell me about the monthly jam in the parking lot at the four corners.

That must be the most outrageous piece of wood I’ve seen in a very long time.

The biggest favor you can do for yourself is forget the upside down guitar thoughts. Mandolessions is a great site and free, and there are reasonable pay sites like Peghead nation. Start saving for a...

Re: PEEK Pick by EML Picks

The difference between now and the good old days: Back then you had a dish full of discarded picks you paid twenty bucks for. Now your dish costs you two hundred. Progress.

    Re: Monel strings

I’m getting used to the tone and really liking it. Adds a resonance to the wound strings that is quite pleasing.

Don't forget to hit a taco truck at 2AM. LA is the taco truck capitol of the world. My daughter has a taco truck right by her house, open until 1AM on weeknights, 3 AM on Fri' and Sat.

    Re: Weber Redesign results

We must also focus on subjectivity and the limitations of auditory memory. Probably one of the most successful instrument redesigns in recent memory was the 2012 Martin D 18. I don't like them. I...
