I resemble that remark!
That probably was helpful—sort of like watching someone else in a mirror.

I know a few lefties and they don’t have it easy. I don’t know why they are in such a minority. You would think that it would be 50% of the people on earth. Strange. Some tools are more difficult for...
I wonder if there are any right-handed folks who opted to pay lefty. Maybe somewhere in the world, like in a mirror or another dimension? :)
Best strings in my opinion are Dogal Calace RW92b Dolce. In US available from Bernunzio.com. I am not sure where you are located.
Even more important, antykathera: These mandolins will not tolerate standard modern strings. You need to string them with extra-lights. I fear that may be why the top looks like it maybe be warping....

This is very exciting to me. Sometime after this thread I acquired this Rosario Genovese mandolin from Greg. I have not seen any others by this maker (or dealer). I am not sure what to do with it...
Tim: all the conversations are still available to read here if you have the time.
Tim: many moons ago the classical section of these forums was very active with many of those artists actually posting here. I had played in a classical-oriented mandolin orchestra in New York but I...

I love that hummingbird inlay. i love those little birds. I am not sure...
Yes, Martin, you must like Ralf Leenen, since you listed him twice, unless you are referring to his twin, also called Ralf Leenen. :)
Nick: you link to a general Google search for "carmelo catania butterfly mandolin" with loads of photos. I looked for the image and I think this is it:

I understand your concern. Also, none of his other transactions as a seller were for musical instruments. OTOH his description seems above board. He even mentioned the refinish and the scratch on the...
Can't see your attachment, NickR.
Weymann, Bauer and Stewart (all connected) seemed to be among the Philadelphia makers that used these front loading tuners.
The last time I heard that Kerman was charging about what a quality F-5 would cost here in the US. Did he quote you a price and how long it would take to make it?
In the meantime, if this doesn't...
Tony: You say your guitar picks don't cut it but what guitar picks are you using? And what it is about your picks that don't work or is it you are just not used to the different feel of a mandolin....
I agree with Nevin that the bowl looks like rosewood. Most bowlbacks were either maple or rosewood, rarely except in lowest level did they ever use mahogany.
D'Addario J-74s are medium-gauge...
And from a few Maurers. It seems like the mid-line and fancier had these collars and the others none.
Here are a few more collars from various Stahl mandolins:
