  1. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I have a couple electric mandolins from John Mann - one 8 string octave and one 5 string octave. I also have a few acoustic mandolins that are my primaries really. I totally agree with the OP - an...

    Viva Las VeGrass 10/12 - 10/13

Anyone heading up to Vegrass? https://vivalasvegrass.org/

It's at a new site this year but should be a lot of fun.

I love those guys but I have yet to visit the store. Great people in general - especially Steve. He's been a great source of knowledge whenever I've talked with him.

    They've been long time...

Re: Huck Finn Music Festival (Ontario CA)

They just released the line up for Huck Finn this year - https://huckfinn.com/lineup

My band Shakedown String Band is in the battle of the bands playing from 12:30 to 1p (real short set haha). If...
  5. Re: David Grisman & Sierra Hull tomorrow in Albany, NY (for free)

Aw man I'm super jealous. I used to live up in Albany for a while (down on Hamilton st).

I just saw a great video from backstage at Pickin in the Pines (AZ) with Sierra, Frank Solven, David...

Re: 8 string solid body playability

I'm a huge fan of John Mann instruments. I have a 5 and 8 string Mann - honestly, I like the 5 way better than the 8 - but they are both great. I have a ThunderBird IV as well - mainly that's wall...

  10. Re: Help! I can't hear the beat when I play a break

I would second the singing the melody in your head. If you do it with tapping your foot, that's even better. Also, I would definitely second counting all music you hear in your head and tapping...

    Re: Go To Jams Now!

Most bluegrass festivals have some sort of Slow Jam event led by an instructor which can be helpful. Some places have a regular slow jam meetup as well. I'm not sure where exactly you are - but try...

While I agree that the massive jam is not a fun jam - only sitting on your couch practicing alone all the time isn't good either IMO. Growing as a musician is difficult to do if you never play with...

    Re: Need some advice.

I find that when a band wants a new member, they'll ask. A lot of times there's more reasons then your skill level or personality that keep you out of a band. In many cases, it has nothing to do...

    Re: Refret for Gibson F9

Thanks. I probably wouldn't use them though. Mainly because if I'm going to install a pickup, I would want to hide it as much as possible - partly for looks, partly for feedback control. I think...

I have another mandolin (Newson) but it doesn't have a pickup installed right now. I'm debating about switching the order of things and sending the Newson to get a pickup installed (probably Twin K)...

This is what the frets look like. Everything before the ~8th fret seems alright to me.

    1st - 5th fret

    4th - 7th fret
    179047

    8th - 15th fret

    Re: Need some advice.

You can really play anything on mandolin. Currently I'm playing in a bluegrass band, a grateful dead acoustic cover band, a 90's rock string band, my own solo stuff (which is a lot of Bluegrass,...

I did the same at the Phish Coventry show in 2004 (the first of their "last" shows). Pouring rain that day, traffic on the highway was a dead stop for 12 hours. Finally parked at a rest stop on the...
  20. Re: SummerGrass, San Diego (Vista), California 8/16-8/18 (THIS WE

    Looking forward to seeing...

I don't think my mando really needs a full refret personally based on the wear - but the wear at least on the first 7th is significant (I play a lot and for a while...
