    Re: Telestar, Teiso, Columbus?

I wish I could tell you. I got burned when I bought mine. Check out Cafe member mrmando's www.emando.com. He usually has a few for sale as well as historical information.

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

Darryl has always striven to get the most realistic feel and look to the parts he manufacturers although it never occurred to me that he could duplicate this part of the experience. I've always known...

    Re: Telestar, Teiso, Columbus?

I have one that looks just like that. They are built pretty heavy like most 70's era Japanese instruments were but the most likely best known mandolin solo was played on the same model.

    Re: Telestar, Teiso, Columbus?

Most of these were imported under a dozen brand names. It's best if you can post an image.

Does it look like the one Ray Jackson is playing in this article?

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

I think a lot of the issue is storing the guard (and binding in some cases not this one) in a closed case can cause the problem to reveal itself. The problem is that not storing in a case can be...

By the way, for those that haven't seen this it's a pretty common problem.

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

Note the label, the riser block and the patent stamp on the pickguard. It's a Gibson, most likely a Jr by the color and lack of binding on the body.

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

It would appear that the pickguard is celluloid and it is off gassing and corroding the strings. Do yourself a favor and remove the pickguard before it causes you any other issues. I wouldn't store...

Re: Help me identify these tuners

I'm sure they would have been available from some of the larger music distributors. They could be something someone with a 70's Gibson F style might want to restore their instrument.

    Re: Gibson head luthiers

Another clarifying note. Gibson purchased Flatiron in 1987. Flatiron labels signed after that time are technically Gibson products built by Gibson employees.

Can anyone determine the actual spelling of the name on that label? I don't want to guess and get it wrong.

Did he sign any labels? Has anyone got an image of a signed label? I'm more than happy to add people if there is something that shows they had a signature on a label. We have a few Gibson General...

OK, I believe they were made by Kluson. Even the color of the aging buttons is right.

Re: Help me identify these tuners

Just removed that reply. I didn't see the markings. Give me a minute. They are circa 1970's but I'm questioning my own call on the brand right now. I have to go look in my pile of tuners. They are...

I'm pretty sure that no actual Virzi's were harmed in that installation. This kind if takes your breath away and not in a good way.

I would assume it was built by Harmony in Chicago. It's their shape and is very similar to some catalog pages.
