Re: Gibson F5-L 1991, what do i need to know

Doesn't John Jorgenson play a pre Flatiron F5-L?
  2. Re: Gibson is preparing to sell NFTs of its most famous models

    I don't think I want to know.
But apparently it doesn't have a fungus.

Does anyone know what that cool blonde mandolin is that A.J. is playing in so many of her videos?

Now that I'm totally confused let me ask this. Was the Virzi in 71900, Jan. 12 '23 original equipment or a retro? If it's retro then it doesn't seem it could be considered the first Virzi since the...

Sticky: Re: Loar Picture of the Day

I spent 2 hours with a Loar and didn't really even look at some of the finer details we're talking about here because the point was to make a video recording. At that time I was totally unaware that...

So I've been doing some Virzi reading this morning including a 2007 thread about the earliest known Virzi. Darryl mentioned 71900, Jan. 12 '23.
The Karasik is 71839, Jan. 5 '23. However, it's been...

Sticky: Re: Loar Picture of the Day

Referencing my photo in post 1205, there are what appear to be some saw nicks into both top and back binding equally. Any idea what happened to leave that feature?Binding done before the points? That...

So when it comes to sawing a back off I assume the process would be to have the blade resting on the bottom gluing surface of the back as you cut. Then you would lose some of the kerf and the sides....

Re: Defining the scroll for an F-Style

Need to correct my numbers. I meant 3/8 " and S-M shows 1/2". Duh.

Re: Defining the scroll for an F-Style

One thing I would point out is the Stew-Mac plan has the scroll way too thick from front button to rear button.
For each plate the total rise should be just a bit over 3/16 ". S-M has it at 1/4"....

I just read most of the thread about retrofitting.
What I question is in every other example the binding ends up thinner. But now with this one they did it differently and sawed it in such a way...

    Sure?
Next question is why the PP isn't dovetailed, top included.
Almost looks like a pencil line though.

    No wonder they fired Loar.
I'm curious too. I sure didn't notice anything but then I wasn't aware of what to look for.

I noted the additional fingerboard markers today. Eli was a classical player and if the music called for it you played up the extension.
Another thing that occurred to me was that Eli owned this...

I got this picture but that doesn't help. I've never heard of a retro Virzi. Why would they do that?

    Re: Modern F4 options?

To me if I wanted an F4 I'd get an F4. They're usually not hard to find and unlike a Gibson F5 they haven't gone stratospheric in price. And they're just so cool.

Here's Eli with the Loar after a Denver Mandolin Orchestra performance. That's Emily's mom behind him.
The flash made it too stark but that's what I got.

Eli wouldn't let bluegrass players play it because when he did they scratched it.

I've heard of Mike Marshall's Loar being re-graduated by John Moneleone but Grisman and Reischman? Really?
