    Re: Early Blues Mandolin

The Steve James is good stuff, the Rich DelGrosso is better, but the best stuff is what you will hear on the old recordings. Johnny Young is a personal favorite to add to the list. Lots of the best...
  2. Re: Balancing practice between two instruments...

I've played 4 instruments for the past 45 years or more. When asked which one I like best I say something like, "Like the late Hugh Hefner used to say, 'which ever one is in my arms'." I don't know...

    Re: Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin

Or a used Eastman 305. Used in either the Kentucky or Eastman would be good.

Re: Mandolins on Gibson web site?

I don't see any mandolins when I got to the Gibson page. I only see Gibson mandolins on The Mandolin Store page.

    Re: PA trip

I can second that trip to Mark Bluett's shop in York, about 30 minutes away. I've played a couple of his mandolins that blew me away. Bob Campbell at Campbell's Music often has a choice mandolin or...

Re: cites rules on older instruments

I know Bubinga is restricted and it, as I understand it, is not technically a rosewood.
  8. Re: Can we talk about tuning mechanisms for a sec?

Grover 309's can be had on eBay for about $50 give or take and they are the go to tuner I have used on several mandolins including an Eastman 315. They are great and have a lifetime warranty, just...

Re: Gerald Anderson, Rest In Peace

I first met Gerald many years ago and we picked a few times and he built my wife's guitar. It is a dandy. Gerald was a standup guy and will be missed.

    Re: Chord Melody Songbooks?

I can heartily recommend Pete's books. They are well done and worthy of your attention. Although not chord melody books per se he has laid out a magnificent set of tools for the mandolin or fiddle...

Re: The rules according to Bill Monroe

    Good dobro, the bluegrass oxymoron.
  12. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I think they are getting killed (and it is their own fault) in the guitar market where everyone and their brother is making a Les Paul styled guitar or 335 or L00 or slope shoulder jumbo, etc. Who is...

I put up a picture of my most recent mandolin but this Elkhorn is by far my favorite.

You can change me to Bob Buckingham if it matters.
  17. Re: Moving between Irish and bluegrass fiddle tunes

Old time for dances is played around 120 bpm unless they are cloggers then the sky is the limit. Warp speed is what they like.
  18. Re: Replacement tuners for an Eastman MD404 ??

Yes the 309's work fine and hold their tuning well.

We've got one a bit earlier and it is a dandy.
  20. Re: Replacement tuners for an Eastman MD404 ??

I've put Grover 18 to 1 tuners on Eastmans with good results. https://www.ebay.com/p/Grover-309n-a-Style-Nickel-Mandolin-Tuning-Machines-4-X-4-Tuners-Set/1603624395?iid=401608000595

    Re: Are Eastmans a keeper?

Eastman mandos are great starter insturments. I have a 315 I got cheap and hot rodded with new hardware and larger frets. It sounds pretty good. I do own mandos that sound better but they are many...
  24. Re: Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational and Eddie Blevins

Eddie had three mandolins, a mandola and an arch top guitar (it was very nice) at the show. Everything sounded good even being as new as some of the pieces were.

    Re: Mando Search Bummer

Since they added the cast tailpiece to the 300 series, they are best bet in Eastman mandolins. For 50 bucks or so you can put Grover 309's on that bad boy and be in business. When the frets go...
