You can change me to Bob Buckingham if it matters.
  3. Re: Moving between Irish and bluegrass fiddle tunes

Old time for dances is played around 120 bpm unless they are cloggers then the sky is the limit. Warp speed is what they like.
  4. Re: Replacement tuners for an Eastman MD404 ??

Yes the 309's work fine and hold their tuning well.

We've got one a bit earlier and it is a dandy.
  6. Re: Replacement tuners for an Eastman MD404 ??

I've put Grover 18 to 1 tuners on Eastmans with good results. https://www.ebay.com/p/Grover-309n-a-Style-Nickel-Mandolin-Tuning-Machines-4-X-4-Tuners-Set/1603624395?iid=401608000595

I had a flatback L&H about 45 years ago that was very similar. The pick guard was a a butterfly though.

    Re: Are Eastmans a keeper?

Eastman mandos are great starter insturments. I have a 315 I got cheap and hot rodded with new hardware and larger frets. It sounds pretty good. I do own mandos that sound better but they are many...
  10. Re: Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational and Eddie Blevins

Eddie had three mandolins, a mandola and an arch top guitar (it was very nice) at the show. Everything sounded good even being as new as some of the pieces were.

    Re: Mando Search Bummer

Since they added the cast tailpiece to the 300 series, they are best bet in Eastman mandolins. For 50 bucks or so you can put Grover 309's on that bad boy and be in business. When the frets go...
  12. Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational and Eddie Blevins

So yesterday I went up to Burnville, NC for the luthier gathering there. Ran into a couple of friends including Rhonda Gouge who was camped at Eddie Blevins booth and flat tearing it up on the...

  14. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

That book, El Norte looks real interesting. There are families with deep roots and Hispanic surnames in the deep south. We forget that in all of the Americas, north, south and central, Spanish is...
  15. Re: Joining the Girouard club - commissioned a build!

I found a used one the other week being sold in a "local" store and drove an hour or so to check it out. It was everything everyone says they are. Well made, good sounding and a piece of art.

    Re: Thanks Dennis...The Mandolin Store

Dennis and Brian are the best. I have bought several things from them over the years and always had a positive experience with them.
  17. Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

I was in a store the other day and they had a nice Eastman and a Gold Tone. Odd two octaves in a small store but...they were both under a grand.

Re: Problems with my first mandolin

Rogue is not a name I trust. Send it back and get something else like a real mandolin.

If you don't lose your pick Wegens are great, I've been using them for over a decade and never wore one out yet.

    Re: Can never enough "Orange"

The song Wolves is very Dylanesque. I like it for the dry delivery and inherent power.

    Re: a bad practice session

All of the above is good advice. You probably are not properly centered in the task at hand. I know this happens to me sometimes. I read the notes or tab and the sound is not what I was expecting...

  23. Re: Mountain Acoustics Luthier Invitational

I'm going and taking a luthier friend. It looks like ti will be fun. I'm looking forward to meeting Eddie Blevins and seeing his mandolins first hand. Jay Licthy has taken lessons in the adult JAM...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

It is my hope that the new NY steel wrap is better than the old wrap that at times would break. I would guess the banjo strings would also have that wrap.
