    Help me find a video

I remember watching it a few years ago but cant find it anymore. Its a very well produced music video of a French (I believe) mandolin quartet performing an original piece. They sit around a small...
  2. One of the coolest quartet pieces ever: Samurai by Ryo Aoyama

This is such a fun piece to play. I partnered with a guitarist friend to put together this quartet which turned out really nice.

Ryo was inspired to write the piece by the main character from the...
  3. The Throne Room (A New Hope) - one man(dolin) quartet

This was really fun to play. It was originally arranged for string quartet but it works really well on mandolins as well. I played the mandocello part on my mandola (GDAE) and down tuned it in post....
  4. Re: One mand quartet! Soluet #6 Flying - Stephen Lalor

Thanks, I enjoy doing these! More to come soon.
  5. One mand quartet! Soluet #6 Flying - Stephen Lalor

I heard Stephen perform this with his trio "Volatinsky" a few weeks ago and fell in love with the piece. I bought the arrangement for string quartet but I don't have a mandocello so I ended up...
  6. Re: Soluet #5: City of Stars - Justin Hurwitz (La La Land)

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Yeah everywhere but in the US a GDAE octave mandolin is called a mandola. I personally think octave mandolin is more clear since it distinguishes it from a CGDA...
  7. Soluet #5: City of Stars - Justin Hurwitz (La La Land)

I arranged this piece for mandola and two mandolins which I guess makes it more of a Triolo...

    Enjoy!

    Sheet music and TAB:...
  8. Playing a cool Japanese duet on my new Hopf Bowlback

I recently got around to purchasing this Hopf mandolin that I have been borrowing from my teacher for a while so this is the first video I make with it.

The piece starts out classical but then...

Re: Soluet #2: Mill Valley Waltz - David Grisman

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm playing a custom Lawrence K. Smith mandolin. He is a luthier here in Sydney who does amazing work. Part of the tone also comes from the Thomastik Infeld flatwound strings...

Re: Soluet #2: Mill Valley Waltz - David Grisman

Thanks man, Tone Poems is one of the first mandolin albums I listened to. I bought the Mel Bay Tone Poems sheet music book and played it from that.

Soluet #2: Mill Valley Waltz - David Grisman

The second installment of the solo duets is a lovely waltz originally by David Grisman. While it appears simple, there are a lot of little grace notes and details in the sheet music that you have to...
  12. Re: Soluet #1: A Town with an Ocean View - Joe Hisaishi(+Sheet Mu

Thanks Bill. I'm playing a newly acquired Suzuki MD-4 mandola and my trusty Custom Lawrence K. Smith F5 mandolin. Both have Thomastik Infeld strings on them.
  13. Soluet #1: A Town with an Ocean View - Joe Hisaishi(+Sheet Music)

This is the first installment in a series of mandolin/mandola solo-duets that I'm hoping to release semi-regularly (weekly/fortnightly). This piece was really easy to arrange from the solo piano...
  14. I composed three solo pieces and the sheet music is now available

I hope it's alright that I post this here.

Earlier this year I wrote three pieces for solo mandolin and posted videos of me playing them which I received great feedback on....
  15. Sheet music for my three solo pieces is now available!

I recently posted videos of me playing three pieces ("Maelstrom", "An Odd Breeze", and "Lullaby for a Four-legged Spider") for solo mandolin that I composed earlier this year and received great...
  16. Re: The last of a trio of solos - "Lullaby for a Four-legged Spid

Thank you very much. Unfortunately I don't have the money or the time at the moment. But in the future I would love to!
  17. The last of a trio of solos - "Lullaby for a Four-legged Spider"

This piece was inspired by someone referring to my fingers as "spidery" as they are long and bony. I liked the image of a spider walking across the fret board so I wrote in some unusual fingering,...
  18. Re: A piece I wrote that uses a lot of glissandro: "An Odd Breeze

Ah You're right Bertram. For some reason I have always thought of it as glissandro when it's actually glissando.
  19. A piece I wrote that uses a lot of glissandro: "An Odd Breeze"

I wrote this piece because I love glissando (slides), it is such a cool sound, but not many pieces use it enough in my opinion. So I wrote this piece that is loaded with them (about 70) so I can get...
  20. Re: My first composition for solo mandolin: "Maelstrom"

Thanks Bill, the mandolin was custom made for me by Lawrence K Smith, a Luthier here in Australia. It is made completely from native Australian woods which is a really nice touch.
  21. Re: My first composition for solo mandolin: "Maelstrom"

    Thank you John!

The name Maelstrom came from the cross picking pattern, but I see what you mean about it being a little to ferocious for the piece.
  22. Re: My first composition for solo mandolin: "Maelstrom"

    Thank you very much Rob.

The harmonics section wasn't actually supposed to be that long, but I really liked it so I ended up extending it. The idea of it was supposed to be that the bottom notes...
  23. My first composition for solo mandolin: "Maelstrom"

Hi all. I have recently had some free time and I thought I would finally try to write my own piece of music for mandolin.

It is based on a cross picking pattern (down up down - down up down) that...
