Discovering the fun of GDGD tuning

After replying to a thread in the Bluegrass section about a tune called "Basset Creek", I tuned one of my mandolins to GDGD and was really taken with the sound. I talked to a friend in NC who plays a...

    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

A used F-5 from Gary Vessel, that was in your area, hit the classifieds less then an hour ago and is already gone! :disbelief:

    Re: What’s after a Kentucky KM-1050?

Lots of good choices in that range. I would add Girouard and Pava to your list of makers to consider.

Its Oldtime banjo. He is playing in the clawhammer style as opposed to the "Scruggs" three finger roll style. I am not familiar with the artist so not sure if the tune is traditional or original....
  7. Re: mass produced instruments & size variations

The Mandolin Store has an Eastman 304 and a Kentucky 272 listed on their site at the moment, the Eastman is $40 less. If the OP is waiting till Christmas there is a good chance she could find a used...

Looks like a well made mandolin...I would call it "The Nessie". ;)
  9. Re: mass produced instruments & size variations

I'm at what the MCF considers a very low-end of the budget range - very low - it's just now I have a $50 Walmart special, and would like an oval hole step up from that. I play another instrument, so...

    Re: Exposed Bushings

I have a similar situation with my F-5. Not as bad as the OP's but clearly visible. When I first got it, I made a tool to go over the post and reseat the bushings during a string change but the edge...

  13. Re: Travelite Case - doesn't close without applying pressure. Nor

I have a Travelite for my Girouard F-5 and I can see imprints from the strings very clearly in the underside of the top. However the case closes easily and I have not had any issues. Bridge height,...

Re: recommend me an acoustic bass

One option might be to look for a 1/2 size upright bass. I played one in an old time band and it held its own with fiddles and banjos. The size and neck were very comfortable to play.
  16. Re: Joining the Girouard Club with an F Oval hole

As a happy owner of a F-5 by Max and Lauri, the only other thing I would covet, would be an F-4 from them.
Look forward to seeing pics of the mandolin.

I would love to see proof of this. Does that mean that Mike's example of a Slingerland catalog featuring mandolins is false?

When you mentioned that your budget is "low", I think most folks that responded did not realize that the instruments you listed are, in at least two cases, under $200.oo. The Yamaha and the...
