    Re: Mandolin Stand Recommendations

It depends on how you want to use it for and how likely pets, children or other family members are likely to knock it over! I’ve got a variety of stands.

    One similar to this:...
  2. Re: Ball end strings for an electric mando?

I get mine from Newtone. You can specify loop or ball end as required. https://newtonestrings.com/

Re: Eurovision song contest worst song?

Eurovision has long ceased to be about the music (whatever you think of its merits or otherwise) and all about the politics; a sort of UN with glitterballs and dry ice. Everyone votes along political...
  5. Re: Experience in Using Effects on Acoustic Mandolins

The mandolinist I saw on Saturday night used a few pedals to great effect: EQ, looper, chorus, octave and reverb IIRC.

The key is to use them sparingly - although you can get some interesting...

    Re: Ashbury Resonator

No experience of that model but I’ve just sold an Ashbury octave mandolin, lovely instrument but it wasn’t getting played enough, and I needed to fund a guitar. I’ve also got an Ashbury electric...

Re: Do people ever change their strings?

I think that the definitive answe will be “it depends” :) How often do you play, how long for and how sweaty are your fingers. I play for about 20 minutes a day on average and change every 2 - 3...

    Re: Tab writing apps

Both Tabledit and TEFView can create a PDF file if you don’t like to read the moving screen.
  10. Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

The Ashbury is a nice instrument and great value for money. Sadly mine is going to its new home today. I loved the instrument but it wasn’t getting played enough especially after I bought a new...

Re: 19" octave mandolin - tune as CGDA

Using a set of EJ76 as a starting point and putting in your scale length suggests that a. 012, 022w, 030w, 044w will have a similar tension to EJ76 on a 1 3/4” scale

Re: 19" octave mandolin - tune as CGDA

You can also use the calculator that Daniel suggested and get it to calculate a custom set for you that will feel the same as a standard set
  15. Re: Experience in Using Effects on Acoustic Mandolins

    Thanks!
  16. Re: Experience in Using Effects on Acoustic Mandolins

Interesting. So what order are your pedals?

For your third point are you putting compression after the flanger?

Re: Eastman 514 vs Eastman 515

I played them side by side a year or so ago. Even to my ears it was enough to convince me that I preferred the oval hole to f hole. But it’s a personal thing.

I was also able to do an f body vs....

Thanks. That was my plan A.
  19. Re: Transcribing from sheet music to tab help

Thanks that’s a useful tool. Wouldn’t have been too much effort the other way - I was planning to let Tabledit do the hard work :)

  21. Re: Transcribing from sheet music to tab help

I found the abc on abc notation so could make a tab for you from that. But possibly not for a few days as its a holiday weekend here.
  22. Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

What's the tailpiece on that Rathlin? Looks more like a Hathway one than a standard Ashbury!
  23. Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

I've got an Ashbury Octave that should come in your budget. Great tone, easy player. Sadly up for sale as I need the cash - but I'm in the UK, hence not advertising here.

    They're the Hobgoblin...

    Re: custom saddles for Mandostrat

Possibly an expensive way about it but the Thomann Mandocaster has a similar bridge design which worked very well.
