  1. Re: Wintergrass Vintage Instrument Showcase

Thanks, Evan. That 35 D-28 sounds like a monster guitar. John's Loar is as fine as it gets.
  2. Re: Your thoughts on Ellis A4s and other modern, upper tier ovals

Sounds like you got a good one there, Mike. :mandosmiley:
  3. Re: OneMic Series- The David Grisman Quintet

That looks like an AEA R88 stereo ribbon mic and it captures the beautiful tones and performance from the Dawg and the band quite nicely. Quite the stereo image if you listen with headphones.

    Re: Chris Thile's new pick

My email from Sweetwater said my pick was shipped today. Interesting.

Haven't had a casein pick since the Compton Taterbug model from Red Bear. Can't find that one anywhere.

Re: What strings are you currently playing?

Another Curt Mangan fan--phosphor bronze in the 11-40 set.

tmsweeny, I had Curt make up a custom set going a little heavier for my Girouard mandola and that did the trick for me. Maybe we can...

    Re: Hester Mandolin

This mandolin arrived at my house this past week. I believe I've found the F5 that will permanently cure my scroll fever. Gail did some reshaping on the neck for me and she's wonderful to work with....

    Re: Mandolin Builders output?

Gilchrist is in 700s now and he's been building since 1980 or so. I find it hard to believe that McClanahan serial number reflects the # of instruments he's built.
  12. Re: Your thoughts on Ellis A4s and other modern, upper tier ovals

When I visited Tom's shop a couple years ago, I played a couple Pava ovals that were the real deal. There were no Ellis ovals there at the time. There's a Pava oval with a torrified top at TMS that...

    Re: Northfield Recurve Case

Just a heads up that the lid flops all the way over--no ribbons to hold the lid upright. My only complaint about the case and I no longer own one.

    Re: Strap recommendations?

The Longhollow Big Softy works great for an A5 but the wide soft part ends up in the middle of your back on an F5.

Re: Home Recording - best bang for buck

The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 (12 and 20 also) intrigues me. Can be used as a live mixer, an audio interface, and a stand alone multitrack recorder with overdubbing. The L-8 even runs on batteries and has...
