    Sticky: Read Me First

The old Forum software has been reinstalled. But I wasn't done meddling just yet. I saw some things in the other version and decided they had their place here so changes have occurred in the...

Like the OP, I also live in the Bay Area, near Gryphon. I had an occasion to visit Nashville a few years back (to deliver a talk), and while I was there, I had the privilege of making a pilgrimage...

I agree with others here in that not only are you veering but you're starting to contradicting yourself. While everyone, including shop owners and other players, will admire your desire to not be an...

As it may be with cars or other somewhat technical devices. The higher quality the main product has, the more fussier you may be with equipment.

A thick pick may make a "cheap" mandolin sound...

    I really hate artistworks.

Mike Marshall is great. I'm sure all their instructors are great. The software is slow and clunky. If there is ever an issue it will break in their favor. I signed...

I bought a tonegard and was a big fan for a while. But it adds considerably to the weight of a mandolin, and although they are well designed, it is nonetheless easy to damage your mandolin with them...

Funny, I was just about to invoke the "authority argument" in defense of your position. :) Since I spent nearly 20 years teaching college music students (in part) to read standard notation and...

So far, I've never named an instrument. But, I did notice an interesting acronym could result from my new blue Fender Alternate Reality Tenor. Maybe not so much a name as a title is in order.

Thatīs a bold statement without giving the shadow of an argument. Your statement is therefore negligable.

Yet I feel inclined to elaborate my point yet again, and probably clearer.

    The OP...

    Re: Common Chord shapes

Yes. Dropping the root (let the bass and guitar play that note) allows for 4 note extended chords on the mandolin. Then you get into the Don Stiernberg question, "Is it a C6 or an Am7?" Answer - yes.

I found Debra Chen's "Standard Notation for the Tab-Addicted Mandolinist" to have many practical solutions for reading on mandolin (even if you aren't addicted to Tab).
