Re: Flamed Maple Top on a Mandolin

"I wonder if anyone has experimented with Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) for instrument sound boards? The tree is also not a true cedar but actually a juniper. The lack of prairie fires in...

    Re: Tenor Banjo Rebuild

Might want to pop over to the Banjo Hangout if you haven't already. They could help you more on the identification. If not I can guarantee they will appreciate the work you have done for sure.

    Re: Tenor Banjo Rebuild

If the neck is original I would guess that is was made by Slingerland. Late Teens/20's. The bowtie mounting ring for the resonator looks like it came from a 30's Maybell. Could be very wrong of...

    Re: Very cheap mandolas

I have the same Harmonia. I just treated it as a Octave Mandolin. Bit short on the scale length but it works. Currently using GHS PF285 Octave set. Tuned to GDAE, so that allows me to use 2 and 3...

    Re: Uke bass strings ?

A Luna Uke Bass is a baritone uke strung like a piccolo bass. Other than that they are pretty much the same. I can see where it would fit in with a Mando band. If anyone is interested. ...

    Re: Uke bass strings ?

.29, .41, .49, and .59 stainless flatwounds are what you need. Luna's website says they still carry them but you will have to pre-order. http://www.lunaguitars.com/query?upc=814064026384 Might...

    Re: East German Mandolin? Repair.

I will try the humidifying first and see what happens. Humidity is usually not a problem down here but it has dryer than I can remember so far this winter. If not I have some spruce laying around...

    East German Mandolin? Repair.

Bought this the other week and mostly it is good shape. However it does have a couple of cracks in the soundboard. They seem to be held by a brace and the binding at the bottom from expanding...

    Re: Short scale tenor banjo

I just switched mine to nylon strings. With a goatskin head it gives the banjo a old timey sound.

Re: string set for octave mandolin 21" scale length

Just Strings has them. Go to the website, single strings, click on D'Addario, bottom right has plain steel strings. Scroll down the page a bit.

    Re: Amber picks

Amber is about as hard as your fingernail. So I imagine it would not last that long. I think I will stick with assorted plastics.

    Re: What's with this scale?

Ed, yep same guy. Not sure if he is the first to make one but he did trademark the name.

Gary F. another common name is the dulcitar. Should have a DAD tuning with the long scale neck. You...

Re: Octave Mandolin and Mandocello Hardware

It really depends on the alloy you are using. Most brasses will soften with the heat then quench method. A few don't. I doubt you would be working with those alloys. Aluminum is a whole 'nother...

    Re: Tenor Banjo strings

17 fret or 19 fret? 19 fret I use the D'Addario Irish Bouzouki J81 set. .011, .016, .028w, .040w. 17 fret will need heavier strings usually to get that plunky Irish sound. My 17 fret has...

    Re: Favorite Newfoundland Band?

Great Big Sea fan here. I did listen to a couple of the Dardanelles songs on Youtube. I see them becoming one of my favorites. Cape Breton is the style I usually listen to from up that way.
