Re: How to enhance mando for legato piece

Interesting thread; I use tremolo combined with double/triple stops a lot, probably more than normal bluegrass players, but I play chord melody style most of the time for roots music including...

Re: Big Mandolin With Banjo Tuning

One of the reasons I'm so happy about the way my mandolin tuning is working out is that I have an old plectrum banjo in the wings waiting for me to decide my flatpicking is up to snuff enough to...

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

You might get some of these answers directly from Bill James himself if you contact him through his Axiom Inc website ( http://www.axinc.net/ ). He was very helpful when I contacted him there.

    Re: Aluminum tuner button question

All I can tell you, related to the aluminum instruments that I have, is that older aluminum alloys are very soft compared to today's aluminum, so you'll want to be extremely careful to avoid melting...
  7. Re: Grass Valley Fathers' Day Bluegrass Festival (CBA)...

Probably worth mentioning, this year's Grass Valley Fathers' Day Bluegrass Festival has been postponed to 2021.

We'll miss seeing everyone there. Be safe, hope to see you all in 2021!

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

In the case of my main playing banjo, recently refretted with Evo, this is an extremely loud banjo that amplifies every sound (including technique if I'm not careful). When I had the refret done I...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

Somewhere along the line I've gotten the impression that Evo frets are lighter in weight than nickle-silver. Might be because Evo frets are supposedly made of the same material used for modern metal...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

I know for sure Austin Clark (out of Boise, Idaho) uses Evo, possibly among other choices. He did the Evo re-fret work on my mando, my banjo and my wife's guitar.

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

I of course went the first (other) direction => to Evo, and so far I wouldn't change anything. My wife and I also had her guitar and my main playing banjo re-fretted to Evo after my mandolin...

But, a word of caution... I have a friend whose beautiful ca ~2000 black body Martin dreadnought's top-center-seam opened up while being played under about 30 minutes...

    Re: Playing with wrist/thumb pain

I wish you the best of luck with this, you have a lot of sympathetic ears here, including mine.

It's worth mentioning, some things can't be reliably fixed, so sometimes the best option is simply...

    Re: New Frets!

About 3 years ago I had Austin Clark re-fret my F-9 with Gold Evo, had it setup, and at that time I also had the back of the neck gently re-profiled, speed necked and french polished. I had worn...
  16. Re: My Mandolin satisfaction maybe related to the cost

Back in late summer / early fall 2016 MK cleared out their stock of the Legacy Festival STB F-style mandolins and MF sold a large number of them for $199. I bought one for me and was so sold on them...

Re: My band asked me to stop playing guitar

    Re: James tailpiece question

Yes. So optimally, in order to add engraving, the plating will need to be removed, the engraving added, and then the cover re-plated.

You could opt to simply have the cover engraved through the...

    Re: Early 1900s mandolins

    Re: I Hate Playing Chords

Who was it who said "there's no money above the 5th fret"?
