    Re: 2013 Gibson F5 Fern

Given your new signature, you might need to ask Scott to change your handle as well, MT2. :))

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

I’m happy to see a scroll return to your stable, Dan, at a price point that makes sense for your backup to the MT. :mandosmiley:

Can you speak up, Mark? I can’t hear you! :))

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

Well, if Dan is sticking with his MT, and in the spirit of keeping the conversation going, how about this one for well under $6K?

Re: F5 with an OVAL hole?

My guess is that Tony meant a short neck (12th fret body join as opposed to 15th) rather than short scale (13” as opposed to 13-7/8”).

    Re: Monteleone F on classifieds

The seller, his business, and his Monteleone are all mentioned in this older thread:

Re: Shoulder pain in fretting arm?

Take a lesson with Pete Martin, who has trained extensively in and teaches carefully to proper ergonomics.
  10. Re: We got your Gibson snakehead mandola right here!

Respectfully, I have no umbrage with the tenor lute. I simply believe that the bodies were originally intended for A-style mandolas with f-holes before the mandolin boom collapsed, the banjo market...

Are they offering any with an alternative neck profile, as I believe they do on their guitars?

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

You mentioned an A5, Dan. Do you like two-points? Of course, there’s always a danger in buying new and paying the cost of depreciation when you’re a notorious horse trader. :))

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

Now we’re talking, Dan! I have always thought the next tier of instruments would include Ellis (as you propose), Kimble (as Charles noted), and Duff (as Josh Levine will soon suggest). I have also...
  14. Re: We got your Gibson snakehead mandola right here!

Yes, I believe that this instrument is the first scratch build of the tenor lute body as a mandola like God and Lloyd originally intended. :))

  18. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

The nut width is actually specified in the ad that you’re referencing at 1-1/16”. I’ve never measured the scale length but assume that it is the traditional 13-15/16” Loar spec. I do know that I have...

    Re: Newbie needs equipment advice

Thanks for saving me the effort. I think a flattop is a great opportunity to get a “starter” priced mandolin that is made of solid woods by an independent luthier or small shop right here in the...
  20. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

No worries. I just recognized the instrument listed as your own and saw an opportunity to make a bad happy camper / Strad-o-Lin/ hipp-o-campus pun.
  21. Re: Keep Rigel or learn on different instrument?

You may learn from the Rigel that you can’t get along with a thick neck, but I’d let it teach you that lesson before parting with it.

    Re: Which mandolin to buy

You don’t say where you’re located, which can often affect what instruments are available and how they’re priced.

The Kentucky KM-150 is an A5 with f-holes which lead to a percussive midrange...
