  1. Re: Live From Here - Is There a Better Music Show ANYWHERE?

I tend to stay out of these, but what the heck. The windchill is below 0 and I'm not going anywhere for a while.

I was struck by how Thile stayed out of the way of the band and singer during the...

Also? "Hejira" is an endless source of inspiration and amazement.
  3. Re: Live From Here Joni Mitchell musicians' birthdays

Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed the whole show, but that version of "A Case of You" left me breathless.
  4. Re: G.L. "Skip" Mandolin - Handmade in Tennessee - Any info?

Well, all I've found is from the Nov. 11, 1996, issue of Splinters, the newsletter of the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers:

Skip Baker presented an outstanding program about his construction methods...

    Re: Year old mandolin

I would describe mine as very responsive. It sounds as good played sweet and slow as loud and hard. That said, the first comment from another player is often, "Dang, that's loud!"

    Re: Year old mandolin

I've had my Arches A-5 since spring 2005. It has a few little nicks but overall is in great cosmetic shape. I've played it a lot but I do try to keep it looking nice. I would not be upset if it...
  7. Re: Where to put strap peg on the back of my mandolin?

Keep it where it is. There is no need to add a peg.

Re: Ideas for a mandolin, $500-1,000

Howard Morris has an A5 in the classifieds for $995. I think he's built more than 400 at this point, and lots of people are happy with them.

Re: what is the best selling mandolin

Years ago there was a traveling Michael Kelly, kind of like today's traveling pick sampler. Someone bought one and it got shipped from Cafe member to member. I had it for a while. It wasn't the worst...

    Re: New case option

I ordered the Pro Rockgear mandolin case Thursday night and it arrived Tuesday. Shipping was $15 and the case was $50. I bought it to house a Kentucky that was in a gig bag. I was always nervous it...

    Re: New case option

I ordered one tonight for a mandolin I like too much to let linger in the gig bag it came with. If anyone wants an update after it arrives, I'll provide one.

Re: Kay Mandolin A style F holes Mand-8

For $1,500 I think you could buy a Silverangel Econo A or a Ratliff Country Boy and be happy for a long time. If it fits your budget, getting into this price range will probably make a big difference.

Re: Trying to make a modest leap...

Dude/Dudette: Get the Flatiron already. The Kentucky is probably a very nice instrument as well, but I don't think you can wrong with a Flatiron and you should be able to resell it easily if you want.

Re: What's on the grill for the 4th?

Skirt steak with chimichurri, corn on the cob with chili and lime. Green beans, green salad and southwest corn pudding with rum sauce are what's not on the grill. Oh, and gin & tonics. The heat index...
  20. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

What an astonishingly unprofessional statement. Do they not have a communications department? I'd flunk that piece if a student in my 200-level course wrote it.

    Re: rigel mandolins

I don't think the price is so out of line. It's a good make and a respected dealer who seems to always take care that his instruments are set up and in good shape. If you need to plug in, this is...

    Re: Kentucky Mandolins

In that case, I'd buy the 272!

That is seriously strange. I guess it's what happens when an algorithm sets the price instead of a person who knows the product.

    Re: Kentucky Mandolins

Color is the only difference among the 270, 272 and 276. I assume the "$1000" difference is a typo and you meant $100. For some reason, prices on these are all over the map. I picked up a 272 for...

Re: Who makes a good inexpensive Octave Mandolin?

It's quite a bit less than your stated top end, but the APC octave from Moloney Music in Galway is quite a nice instrument that, if mine is any indication, comes set up beautifully. It's less than...
