Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

I’m sure that this has been asked before, but, is there any chance of getting monel guitar strings from D’Addario? I’ve got an old jazz box that is crying out for them.

    I know that Martin makes...

    Re: bits to cut inlays

And, one post by Marty shows how much I don’t know about any of this.

I know what those words mean individually but not when they are put together in that order. :^ p

Re: Trillium Octave mandolin string gauge

For the trussed, look inside the sound hole. It should be just under the soundboard. It's really hard to get a good look at, so you your fingers to find it.

    Re: Eastman Octave MDO-305

    It's cast and solid.

I would save your cash unless you want to use ball end strings (or if you just don't like it).

    Re: Electromagnetic output from pickups

It could be lots of things: type of pickups, impedance (how “hot”) of pickups, types of pots, capacitors, wiring, etc.

To solve it, I would put a boost pedal as the first pedal for the Mando.

    Re: Mandolin music library

East Tennessee State University has a Bluegrass, Old-time, and Country Music Studies Major. They also have a Jazz major program.

    Re: Expensive mandolins

Expensive and "great sounding" are subjective. Beautiful is also subjective.

I said that I would never spend over $1000 for a guitar or $1500 for a mandolin. That resolution was broken several...
  8. Re: Third string out of tune below the fifth fret

Looks like the compensation is way off. Those are all wound strings. The bridge should step up from the C (farthest towards the neck) to the A (closest to the neck) instead of the up-up-down-up...
  9. Re: Third string out of tune below the fifth fret

Check if your bridge saddle is turned around.

Since the issue gets worse the more you move towards the bridge I would guess that's where your issue is.

I would tell her to listen to a couple of sets before joining in. Get a feel for how the Trad people are playing, listen to how and where they emphasize notes, and then join in.

  11. Re: Bouzouki built for under $1k? Any thoughts?

I don't think that you're going to find anyone to build you a bouzouki for less than $1k.

I think that the best deal in bouzoukis is Phil Crump (http://www.pwcrumpco.com/index.html). His zouks...

Re: Flatwound strings for 17'' Mandola

There are flatTOP mandala strings readily available. D'Addario EFT76 are a flattop set with .053 .035 .024 .016. They have an even higher total tension than the roundwound strings, so I usually stay...

    Re: Carbon fiber mandolins

If anyone can make a composite mandolin that gets past the "buy with the eyes test", it will be Marty. His sense of design is amazing in both visual and acoustic properties.

I would just sell them with out the hardware. I usually just upgrade the tuners and tailpiece anyway.

Re: Flatwound strings for 17'' Mandola

Not flat wound, but you could also try D'Addario (or other) Octave Mandolin strings (EJ80). 46-32-22-12 string gauges. These will be lower tension (but not floppy) so, less bright.

    Just a note:...

Have you talked to your doc about Lyrica (Pregabalin) for the never pain?

    Re: Best string/mandolin match-ups?

I like D'Addario EFW-74 (flat wounds) on my Gibson A-1. I also use them on my 1923 B&D tenor banjo. I usually circle back to D'Addario EXP-74 for everything else. I'm still trying different sets...
