Re: Top bracing a Gibson EM150

Definitely glue the brace to the top. Gluing to the other brace if it is straight will strengthen the brace, but gluing to the top too will give you more strength.

Sounds good to me. Make sure your new brace fits well before gluing.

Re: Top bracing a Gibson EM150

It sounds like the brace that should be there has come unglued on the bass side.

Re: National Reso-Phonic RM1 Hot Plate

The hotplate is only in the cover and will not change the sound of the instrument acoustically. It is a good sounding setup, tho I have only heard it on guitars.

    Re: Magnetic Pickup Advice

Since most pickups have pole pieces that are not the correct spacing for a mandolin. Look for a pickup with a blade instead of pole pieces. It will be more balanced. You can however take the screw on...

    Re: Magnetic Pickup Advice

Kent Armstrong makes a very thin jazz pickup that I have put on mandolins and it sounds quite acoustic. If you use bronze strings it will only pickup the cores of the wound strings, but it still...

    Re: Truss rod or not?

A simple twist of the truss rod would have been easier than new frets. I have had non truss rod mandolin necks get relief and when they do they can be fixed, but not as simply as adjusting the rod. I...

Happy B day MC, with many more returns. It has been my favorite place for the last ten years. Thanks to Scott and all who make this happen.

    Re: Broadway mandolin

Make the neck comfortable for you. If you have a truss rod it can be more shallow. I like a shallow rounded neck, tho I also play a V neck with no problem.

Re: Bridge and Tail Piece Recomendations

If you made a mandolin you can make a bridge/saddle. A piece of ebony is all you need. Well......and some tools, but I think since you made a mandolin you have those.

    Re: Material Below the Bridge

A piece of felt or leather on the tailpiece cover will work, be out of site, and you won't have to look all over when you break, or change, a string.

Re: Nut Slots Cut Too Low

I would also check that the first fret is not lifting slightly. First I would seat the fret just to make sure. One only side may have lifted.

I graduated in '68, draft number 2. I enlisted in the Navy, did overseas time in an ammo depot, and worked on Appolo 9. Also worked for 20th Century Fox when filming Tora, Tora, Tora. All in all...

    Re: Traditional Bridge w/ piezo

Fishman will sell you one with a piezo in the saddle or the bridge foot. They don't sound as good as one on/under the top. IMHO

    Re: Radius bridge issue?

I would simply arch the saddle you have to the radius of the fingerboard. Don't take any off the E string side. Take it off the top, shouldn't hurt anything, unless your saddle is already very low.

    Re: Who has thin bluechips?

The only thing I care about is sound. I like the way the BC glides across the strings, but the Wegen is very similar. The 35 BC was not giving me the sound I wanted, nor the TF100 Wegen. I thinned...

  25. Re: Nitrocellulose reactions with tuning machines

Could there have been something on the gear/assembly that was a lube from the factory. Would have been long since dry but may have stained decades ago.
