    Re: proper fret dress

Well, it's possible that I misunderstood what this tech was offering. I might pay $195 for a really thorough setup job including a fret dress, but it sure sounded like she was saying she'd charge...

    Re: proper fret dress

Was just quoted $195 for a full mandolin fret dress. Seem high?

    Re: Lyon an Healy?

    Up over $1K.

I was interested in part because I already have a potential line on a tailpiece cover, but at this price I think I'm out. I got a Style B (L&H label) in *much* better condition on...

    Re: Amy Helm chord form

Hm. I use my thumb for 2-finger D and Dm chords in first position, but I never thought about doing this.

I just played in the pit band for a stage musical and there were a lot of 5 chords in the...

    Re: Gibson A1 (requesting information)

If your nephew comes back and learns you sold his mandolin, he ain't gonna be happy, no matter how much you sold it for.

Re: Eastman octave mandolin $350 - CL

I see a couple of new ones on Reverb for $745. So this is less than half price, meaning it's a good deal.
  11. Re: Lyon & Healy style 5283 Model A) at Skinnerís auctions

Given that, I'd be surprised if it meets the estimated $2–3K.

The bridges on these instruments don't look right ... they appear to be a lighter color than ebony. I don't know if that means they...

    Re: Lyon an Healy?

I bought a Lyon & Healy from Shopgoodwill once.

It is still in a luthier's shop waiting to be fixed.

But I might be foolish enough to do it again.

Re: Gibson 5-string mandolin oddity on eBay

Given the size of the body and soundhole relative to the talipiece base, isn't this a mandocello body we're looking at? Proportions don't seem right for a mandolin or mandola body.

  15. Re: Lyon & Healy style 5283 Model A) at Skinnerís auctions

Holy cow. One of them might well have, yes. I'm told Goichberg was very keen on the L&H sound and his quartet was all L&H instruments. So he and Zelnicki might well have played L&H mandolins on that...

Re: 5 string electric mandolin string info

Tiny used Black Diamond guitar strings, but I don't know the exact gauges.

.018 is really heavy for an A string. 5-string players tend to want slightly lighter strings than acoustic players, for...
  18. Re: what strings do you recommend for a rigel mando ?

Rigel, for a time anyway, strung everything with John Pearse strings, but I don't know the gauge. 74s will work just fine.

    Glue for Randy Wood pickguard

The pickguard on my Randy Wood F5 has two pins that go into the fretboard, plus a side bracket with a little ebony block that's glued to the underside of the pickguard.

    At least it *was* glued....

There would have been more, but the mandolin was accidentally buried in whipped cream during a photo shoot.
  22. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

If you bring a mandolin to an old-time session, don't play it like a bluegrass mandolin. No chop chords in old-time!
  23. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

It's certainly an important instrument in African-American string band music. White old-time string bands like the Skillet Lickers used it, but less frequently.
