I love the Gabriel Wiseman monel set that CM has, have been using them for a few months now (2 sets).
They are the "custom medium" gauges I prefer and I think they are as good or better than the...
We are new to small dogs. Through a spit of magic we ended up adopting two Havanese during Covid. The first one in April and the second one in August. Female first and male second. Figured that...

To expand upon what Dale said, and upon a couple of other things that have been mentioned here... this might get kind of long, but you don't have to read it if you don't want to...
As we play we...
I don’t like vodka martinis. It must be gin. Also, I enjoy F-style mandolins and coffee ;)
One of the all-time great players and proof that the 10,000 hour practice rule (plus Schlitz beer) works!
RIP, EVH
Just wanted to share this project I was fortunate to be a part of. My best buddy, Brian 'Willie' Williams figured the three mandolin parts to Ricochet, one of the tunes I've dreamed of playing since...
The 4th and 5th harmonics are pretty strong when we pluck a string, and often clip-on tuners will pick up one of them instead of the fundamental. For example, D is the 5th harmonic of G, so it is not...
There was no truss rod in the neck of Peter's mandolins.
Did you contact him to ask these questions? He lurks around here and is likely watching. Even though you bought it secondhand, he may be...
Speaking of Sideman Sam, this break off Berserkely (Markology, 1979) has thrilled for decades, so much so that I had John McGann work his transcription magic on it.
Absolutely! Both of those also work great as set openers.
Around the fire, with only one choice, I might also go with John Reischman’s “Little Pine Siskin” or “Daylighting the Creek.”
Has there ever been a better intro to a song? And the way David similarly ends the song but in reverse form . . . nothing short of inspired genius!
You'd be fine by me.
Years ago I took a workshop presented by Seth Rosen, a departed musician that I miss. Seth talked about playing "secondary rhythm", meaning that in many band/jam situations...
Found this site that has some cool older Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Catalogs from the Teens. My 1916 Gibson A was $25, and the Canvas case was $1.75 That's $588 in todays money. Enjoy!

Hey it's been ages since I've been on here. Life and stuff.

So sorry to hear about Marc's passing.
It's an interesting topic that hits home. I was introduced to busking in 1975, and did it heavily throughout my 20s, and occasionally since. I always liked...
Yeah, but as the condition of the music business continues to deteriorate, some of us might have to start taking work that we would have previously turned down.
That said, I'm not going to take a...
You can do a nice G chop using the G string fretted at the 4th fret, the D string at the 5th, the A string at the second and let your finger mute the E. I prefer this to fretting the G at the 7th.
Since you’re asking, I like the idea of the truss rod cover, and I have no issue with having it speednecked so that you can play it comfortably. I’d leave the aesthetics alone and remember them...
My good buddy Steve Roy & I have a duo, Steve & Dave Play Dead, which is what we do, and we did it as part of an online fest we are a part of, Dead to the Core, this past weekend. We are the only act...
+1 on the Curt Mangan vs. D'Addario monels. I tried both on a Gibson Jam Master A and preferred the Mangans. Tone seemed a bit more complex and they felt nicer to my fingers.
There's also a...
My Collings mandola came with one of the Allen type tailpieces and I hate it with a vengeance. It’s difficult to keep the string loops on whilst you’re stringing up and you have to yank the strings...
There's not much in lutherie that's not hard on the back, shoulders, neck, hands, or eyes.
Practically speaking, modern era Washburn's vary in quality of tone and construction from passable to pretty bad.
The more recently made ones I have seen tend towards pretty bad.
I would offer...
