  1. Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

Learning the scales starting with any finger is a great exercise to help with this. I can attest that starting a scale with the middle finger of your left hand is often drastically easier than...

    Black Wegen picks on eBay

Isn't a left handed pick a right handed one, if you switch your upstrokes and downstrokes?

Of course, being the Cafe, I would be remiss if I didn't say

  6. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

As one who plays many "non-traditional for mandolin" songs on the mandolin, I can tell you it just takes time. I originally capoed a few songs I found particularly challenging but after a while,...

    Re: Happy Birthday, Mandolin Cafe!

Thanks so much, Cafe! I've enjoyed the conversations a lot and there's little to no chance I would have wound up with my Kelley, without this place.

    So much goodness!!

    Re: D'Addario Nickel Bronze Strings

The previous two posts look like they have the ability to solve each other.

    Re: Beginner song list?

Also look up more than one artist version. Some will be screaming fast and filled with improv and some won't. Readhaired Boy is not too tough for a beginner.

Re: Trying to identify an old pick

Most shows I play, there's a Primetone in my hand and a Wegen in my pocket or vice-versa. You can't go wrong with that. Add in a Golden Gate or Proplec faux tortoise and you have my top three choices.

I've tried Mapes Phosphor Bronze and compare them favorably to other brands. Their nickel-plated steel are just not appreciated by my instrument.
