    Re: Eastman 314 vs 514

I have a preference for the satin/matte finish. I have a MD314 and a MD305 - to my ears they have a dryer, woodier tone than 500 series. I've never had an issue with the tuners on either instrument.

Re: A few more questions about an Eastman 305

I agree the 300 series (satin finish) sound better (woody, dry, open) than the nitro glossy models ... I own two MD305 and MD314..

Re: A few more questions about an Eastman 305

I have an older 305. EJ74s are my mainstays. All the 300 series have a satin finish. I've read that Eastman no longer uses nitro; switching to a poly based "TrueTone". "Varnish" finishes are...

Re: Any Thoughts on Eastman Trutone Finish?

Hmmm... Haven't played any newer ones. I really like the woody tone of the satin finish.. I own two 300 series (MD305 - 7-8 years old & a MD314 - purchased June 2020).. and a friend has a 10+ years...

    Re: McClung Armrest

You might want to look at these. I have one on each of Eastmans. They are pricey but, IMO the best arm rests I have ever used.

    Re: Gold-plated Eastman mandolin tailpiece...

If you are upgrading from a stamped to a cast tail piece on an Eastman mandolin, you might want to consider this as FYI:

I inquired with Eastman a year or two ago about obtaining a cast tail piece...

    Re: Dr. Arm for Mandolin

Put simply ... the tone gard does not actually "increase the volume" per se .. it prevents the back from a belly-press-dampening effect, so to speak, which can be difficult to avoid if standing while...

    Re: Dr. Arm for Mandolin

Maybe a better way to describe the effect of a tone gard is that is allows the mando to resonate fully (undampened) and that of the arm rest is for comfort (no stress on forearm) - I don't see a...

    Re: Dr. Arm for Mandolin

    Great input from all.
In 45+ years of playing guitar and mandolin, I'd never been particularly interested in adding anything on to my instruments. At the suggestion of another long-time player (and...

What are your thoughts (or reviews) of this product?

    Hahahaha...
Since I started this thread with "Did it affect the way you normally held your mandolin? Require an adjustment to get used to the feel?" and now that I've had one for a month or so.... ...

Re: Tone Gard - Comfortable ?

That is basically the consensus. It easier to hold the mandolin away from the body while seated. Not as easy while standing.

In the early eighties, Madeira mandolins were made in Japan and distributed by Guild. I have owned one - an M-10 - since 1982. Great build quality. It's a double cut away tear drop, F hole A style,...

    Re: Eastman MD305 = AMAZING!

I've had an MD305 for several years. I believe the satin finish really helps to bring out the woody tone. It plays and sounds like a much more expensive instrument. It's not my only mandolin but it's...
