  1. Re: Mandolin batch in the latest Skinner auction, incl. THREE Shu

I’m not complaining about their business model, just explaining it to a fellow poster. If I was unclear, I am a satisfied customer of Skinner in the past who would happily buy from them again in the...
  2. Re: Mandolin batch in the latest Skinner auction, incl. THREE Shu

You can get the sales tax (6.25%) waived with a dealer’s license. And it’s still possible to do well if you bid knowing that every $1000 is really $1300.

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

I have typically used the Mittels (mediums) on lighter built flattops and Starks (heavies) on archtops and a resonator, but I don’t think you’ll have any problems with the set you’ve chosen on your...

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

I do, Dan. I first tried them on a Gypsy flattop and now typically install them on your cousin’s early National RM-1. They feel great on the fingertips, last a long time, and add a different sound to...
  6. Re: Mandolin batch in the latest Skinner auction, incl. THREE Shu

In the case of Skinner, they charge 23% in auction fees and 6.25% in sales tax before you arrange pickup, boxing, and shipping by a third party. It adds 30% to your bottom line pretty quickly.

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

I think I am making the point that the absence of an intent to deceive nullifies the definition of forgery which you shared.

You did introduce introduce the term to the conversation:

It seems to me that you are making an argument of definition — that Gary has produced a “forgery” — only the definition that you introduced does not support your argument.

Not speaking for anyone else, but for me, this part of the definition renders the term (and therefore the characterization) inaccurate.

    Re: Help with upgrade, please

Have you considered a flattop mandolin? Since they take less time to build, and therefore cost less to produce, they are more affordable to purchase, making it possible to buy a solid wood instrument...

    Re: Amazing Mandola Alert

Did you change your mind? Or did someone else finally consummate a long-held wish? The “new” 2017 Passernig F5 from Reverb has finally sold (and it wasn’t me!):

  14. Re: How important is having the original hardshell case?

If it is being sold as a collectible, I think it’s very important. If it is being bought as a player’s grade instrument, it’s a little less so.

Re: Can anyone identify this mandolin?

Where would that neck have been sourced (or built)? It looks like a 1930’s Gibson oval headstock with an F5 Florida extension. Did H. Russell try to make a Mrs. Griffith oval A00.5?

  20. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

You’re going to have to get a little lucky to find a “professional” level archtop mandolin below $1K, although they do happen. There was a Lafferty listed earlier this week, and you’ll occasionally...
