    Re: Humidity

My octave mandolin goes up to a 1/4 tone flat when it’s dry outside and sharp 1/4 tone when rain’s forecast. Wondering that’s bad over time.
My bodhran is a great weather forecaster.

Re: Sheet Music w/Lyrics and Chords

Do a search for ‘song collection’ and ‘ukulele’. You’ll get a whole load of great, optimistic, happy songs that sound good when played simply/acoustically.
There are tens of thousands of songs on...

    Re: New mandolin player

Make sure that each morning as you open the car door to go to work you check both hands.
-don’t ever take your mandolin with you.
  9. Re: Using Tabledit to transpose from Manadolin GDAE to Mandola CG

You can also transpose tunes using mandolintab.net that’s if you write the notes out as an .abc file. You can get harmonised voicings too by transcribing for example, up four frets and then change...

Re: Looking for exotic scales for Mandola

Here’s a scale reference page, there’s an audio file for each one.

It can be good to get a teacher though, at least to show you how...

Re: sanding/scratching picks for better grip

Just as an experiment I did the sanding (a small piece of slate) and exacto knife trick on 6 originally smooth Dunlop picks (1.5 mm).
I didn’t touch the tip part.

I found that the ones with just...

Re: Looking for exotic scales for Mandola

I found that it’s much easier to use tab for this, I did a vid on what I knew about the Harmonic Minor scale a while ago.
It helps a lot too, if you have fretboard vids of people playing the tunes...

Re: 3/4 of an octave mandolin

Another advantage is that if you do play it a course lower then someone watching you who plays a mandolin can learn the tune from you by using the same fingering.

Re: Question about customising a mandolin

My 2 cents would be to lock yourself up in a cabin in the woods. You have food, water, a couple of good OldTime tune books with TAB too, and a METRONOME.
    Three months should do it.
    When you emerge...
  20. Re: DGBE (Chicago) Tuning: A and Bb/A# chords are weird

Could be a similar issue to ‘normal’ guitars, tune all strings exactly on pitch but flatten the B string by about 1/8 tone, sometimes more.
See how that works. Check harmonics too.

Re: How Do I Maximize An Octave Mandolin?

Talking of Mattie, here’s a cracking song with banjo, I think he’s alternating to the fifth of each note whenever it’s a quarter or more, or maybe it’s my imagination!
