  1. Re: "Modern" vs. "Traditional" setup preference

Admittedly, I did come from playing guitar first, but I've played mostly thin radiused fretboards over the years, so I was pretty used to them. My Lebeda has a wide nut and flat fretboard, both of...

    Re: Hofner restore

I have a 545 that I had restored by David Schneider a few years ago. Same as Roddy said above, the neck came off (twice) and the neck angle was way too low, keeping the strings just off the body...
  3. Re: what difference does a radiused fretboard do-compared to flat

I have a pretty strong preferrence for flat boards, my hands feel more comfortable and I can play a little more smoothly. My Lebeda has an extra wide and flat board, and it feels custom made for my...

    Re: J.Bovier Mandolins

Ivan, it was a special F5 fern Jiri made to commemorate 25 years of building mandolins. It has a varnish finish, wide, flat radius-neck, block inlay on the neck, and the truss rod cover "1978-2003"...

    Re: J.Bovier Mandolins

    Hi Ivan,
Last year I visited Jeff's shop and got to play a few of his J.Boviers. The zebra wood model looks amazing in person! Though they all sounded really good, my favorite was an X-braced A...

Re: Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg

I had the great pleasure of hearing Mike and Caterina perform many of these songs at last year's Mandolin Symposium. My wife pre-ordered the CD, can't wait to get it!

    Nashville mandolins....

My wonderful wife took me to Nashville over the weekend for my b-day. Anyway, she turned me loose at the Gibson Showcase in the Opry Mills mall and at Gruhn Guitars on Broadway.

    Re: Hofner Mandolin

Hi George, welcome to the mandolin cafe. I have a Hofner model 545, which is likely the same model. They are made of all mahagony, including the neck, with elongated teardrop shaped sound holes. ...
  11. Re: Can you name(remember) all the mandolins you've ever owned?

    1) Hofner 545 (all mahagony A style with cat's eye sound holes) Short scale neck, but good "folky" sound. Still have it. Lot's of upgrade work to make it really playable.
    2) Epiphone MM-30, never...

Re: Electric Hofner with no SN

    Mitch,
I think the electric version just had an e added to the 545. I think they would be priced fairly close to the non-electric versions, which I've seen selling for around $800 -$900, but that...

    Re: Dawg picks

I'm happy with the Dawg picks when I'm playing unplugged or with a mic. But when I plug in (fishman bridge pickup) the they sound dull and clunky through the PA. The purple Dunlaps seem better then.

I had a Montana Performer A that I bought new in '97, though it had been sitting around the shop for a long time, so it was probably close to the same year as the one you're looking at. #To me the...

    Hi Sanchen,

Yes, I'll give them a thumbs up. I took my guitar in for a set up last year, the tech did it while I waited for free! #Other dealings I've had with them in the past were also good....
