    Re: Michael Jackson done right.

That's a home run! But it would have been a grand slam if he had done Beat It with a mandolin break over Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo.

His polka version of Shallow is pretty funny as well.

Re: Trouble hearing "in tune" unison strings

Try fretting the 3rd and 5th frets while tuning the A string and tweak from there. I always get better results doing that.
  3. Do You Play ALL of Your Mandolins Regularly?

From a January 2008 Vintage Guitar Magazine article...

For most of his career, Thile has played mandolins built by luthier Lynn Dudenbostel. He acquired Dudenbostel #5 in 1998, then sold it to buy...

Re: Your Thoughts On D'Addario XT Strings

    Update to my original post:

After initially being disappointed I tried another set of XT's, this time on my 2009 Gilchrist and had much more positive results. They sound quite good and they do...

This Repurposing Thing Has Gone Too Far

I recently saw this at a co-op flea market. On the positive side it was only $35.

    Re: No more EXP74's?

I also felt there was a noticeable loss of volume and my G string sounded tubby. I will try the XT's again (maybe) just to make sure, but I sure did like the EXP74's.

Re: Bill Monroe's Actual Pick and Phone Number

Did I mention that these two items were given to me by a mysterious man at a crossroads around midnight?

Re: Bill Monroe's Actual Pick and Phone Number

Nashville's original area code was 615. I couldn't resist, so I tried calling the number. The recording said that this number has been disconnected or is no longer in use. I guess they retired Bill's...

Re: Bill Monroe's Actual Pick and Phone Number

Yes, the TD40 would be the closest because it is exactly the same thickness, but the original Monroe pick is even smaller than the TD and it does not have the Blue Chip bevels. It is safe to assume...

Bill Monroe's Actual Pick and Phone Number

Check out how puny this Bill Monroe pick is. It is certainly not up to modern material, shape, bevel, or size but it sure got the job done. It measures .040" in thickness and for comparison...

    Re: Lloyd Loar's Pick

Over the years I have found hundreds of old picks in vintage instrument cases and none of them were anywhere near as thick as modern-day pickers prefer.

Your Thoughts On D'Addario XT Strings

Last week I installed a set of 11.5 to 40 XT's on my Gibson Master Model and my mandolin sounded terrible. It suffered a complete loss of volume and the G-string was tubby. Luckily, I had a new set...

Re: Autoharps for playing fiddle tunes

I have bought several very clean Oscar Schmidt autoharps over the years in cases, and all under $100 at flea markets, auctions, yard sales, etc. And those were the ones with a gazillion buttons too....
  23. Re: What Brand(s) of Mandolins did Chris Thile play before his Lo

That is interesting, because here is a MM from our own carleshicks Master Model list:

So why did Chris get a...
  24. Re: Well Lloyd... a lot sure has changed in the last 12 years.

Yes, but the Loars seemed to have their own a unique cycle. Today a Loar is about double the 2002 price, but not too long ago they were about triple.

It would be interesting to see a year by year...
  25. Well Lloyd... a lot sure has changed in the last 12 years.

This is a screen grab of something I stumbled upon while surfing. In only 12 years it seems like a real bargain. And that price includes the buyer's premium.
