    Re: “Banjo killer”? Wishful thinking?

I have myself been guilty of wanting the loudest instrument at the jam, but now I see the diminishing returns there. I find a jam where everyone is pushing the volume to 12 and you are competing with...
  2. Re: Chris Henry New Monroe Improvisation Course

For those that were asking about the workshops, Chris was advertising on Facebook as a couple slots opened for the next 2 seminars. He caps it at 10, so not sure if they are still available but...
  3. Re: Sparse mando and guitar examples aka taste lessons

  4. Re: Chris Henry New Monroe Improvisation Course

Yes, he refers to those as modules. The most common ones are the staggereds, slideys, bounce, infinity shape, and then you see some other stuff as well, but those common ones he refers to again and...
  5. Re: Chris Henry New Monroe Improvisation Course

Having been through most of the material I can say that it may be helpful to watch the first videos and get an overview of the modules and then proceed to a song you like. It is tough to get the...

    Re: Slow Jam Tips Needed

Typical etiquette at a slow jam would be to tell the next person if you plan on not taking a break so they can get ready. You can teach that rule to everyone. A song list would be a good way to start...
  7. Re: Chris Henry New Monroe Improvisation Course

Chris has been capping the workshops at 10 people so that he can engage with each student. He has advertised it a little bit in the Monroe Mandolin Facebook group when he needed to fill slots. He may...
  8. Re: Chris Henry New Monroe Improvisation Course

I have been part of the workshops that Chris has been putting on with David McLaughlin that have been used to develop this and I will echo that they are breaking new ground. If you are interested in...

Re: jams with friends during covid

I've heard banjos are super spreaders of loud noises.
  10. Re: MAS: Remember, it's stronger than you and there ain't no vacc

Best thing to do is social distance yourself from the classifieds and any other online vendor or in person instrument until the vaccine has been developed.

    Re: Kimble or Duff F5?

In full transparency, I will be listing one for sale soon, as such will not be adding any more of my thoughts/opinions to the thread. But, since I have first hand knowledge of these instruments I am...

Ok, here's a better video/audio of the 2017 Duff. Kimble will be coming in a little.

    Re: Kimble or Duff F5?

Well, here's a video. It's not perfect as variables weren't controlled that well and the mic was a bit hot, but I don't have a ton of time to do another one right now. Maybe I will update it. The...

    Re: Kimble or Duff F5?

I own As by both builders and they are both great. The Duff has been my primary player for the past 3 years, so I've played alot of notes on it. They are both fairly recent. They both lend towards...

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

Eek, now I've gone on down the rabbit hole: So here you can see 3 modern bluegrass mandolins. I think the Duff in the center is closest to the Griffith shapewise, to the right is a Kimble which is...

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

I don't know that OP stated he wanted a bluegrass specific A5 and even so, saying that body shape has to match the Griffith is a pretty strict definition of a bluegrass mandolin. Plenty of great...

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

I do agree with the adage that at the higher price points you get to instruments that are all world class, pro level instruments, it comes down to what kind of tones and feel you want and it is hard...

Re: A Newcomer to Mandolin Asks the Experts

Right hand! If you can spend time just working on rest strokes and timing with the right hand it will pay off dividends! Part of that is holding the pick correctly. It seems like this stuff is not...

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

I wasn't going to say that. Don't get a Duff, they are terrible. or a Ruhland, terrible value. (You should actually get either of those) Kimble's are great too. Lot's of great A5s under $6000.

    Re: Beginner getting into Bluegrass

If you want to learn Bluegrass a great starting point is Monroe, as that is the roots. Early on that felt pretty inaccessible to me. A great entry point for me was Bluegrass Album Band. That is real...

    Re: Some new backing tracks

Yes, these are so amazing. Thanks for all the hard work you have put into these. They have helped me immensely in learning to play these tunes up to speed.
  23. Re: Play with backup tracks, sing with mp3s. Looking for new sour

Wow, looks like I posted that already 1 post ago. Quarantine brain. I must really enjoy those jams.
  24. Re: Play with backup tracks, sing with mp3s. Looking for new sour

If you are on Facebook, look up Tyler Grant Music. He has been hosting playalong jams every monday night at slow, mid, and fast tempos. And they are all archived on his page. It is pretty fun.
