Re: Gilchrist Mandolins, is there a best year?

I've owned two, both parallel braced. My older one, a '97, was played a lot and had it all, my personal favourite. My newer one from '06 initially sounded like it needed playing but had huge...
  2. Re: Can anyone offer any Fiddle help?... sorry no Mando content

Agree with Jeff. As with most stringed instruments, you could spend $200 on a good set up alone! If not set up, you can't play it or it won't sound like it should/could. A teacher might be able to...

Re: Gibson a jr open seam on back.

It's an open separation, so the longer you wait to do a fix, the more likely dirt and oils from your hands etc. will get in and make gluing later more difficult.

    Re: Hole in bridge

The hole in the bridge is usually filled with black felt so the pick guard pin doesn't flop around.
  5. Re: I need information about a Carlson signed Flatiron A

Bill...from what I see in the old ads, and know from having owned several Flatirons including F's and A's, and from what I see when I look inside my 1984 A5-2, there IS a truss rod. There are two...

Hey Mr. Banjo....were you able to identify source of the problem, and come up with a solution that worked? Fixed yet...gap closed? Thanks.

    Re: Help with Gibson Separation

If you can't get a thin probe past the underside of the neck block, sounds like there is no separation. Could the white binding material simply have shrunk....leaving a gap that is not really a...

    Re: 1920-21 Gibson F4 value?

With the back coming off/separating from the neck block assembly, there is a lot of string tension pulling on the neck...you might want to take the strings off or detune them. The tuners are after...

Looking forward to viewing the mandolin room! And the entertainment.
  10. Re: Did Loar- era F4's have full contact bridge bases?

The period or proper bridge for your instrument should be adjustable, and arched, with "feet".....not full contact. Never heard of full contact adjustable bridges in the Loar period. You should see a...

    Re: sinker wood

I seem to remember reading, many years ago in Popular Mechanics or the like, about a model boat builder who used apple wood to build model sailing ships. If he cut the tree down in the summer, he...
  12. Re: Yes this is a mandolin forum but surely there's a fiddle expe

You don't tell us what you know about instruments, and especially set-up......this one looks scarred by careless beginners, and may be $100 down the drain. Any decent set-up, an absolute must, even...

Instrument Glue - Fish or Hide, Same?

Maybe this has been covered before, don't know. What's been your experience/advice in using Fish glue (say Lee Valley) instead of Hot or bottled Hide Glue? The "animal" content factors are similar...

Re: strings for a Gibson A3?

The FON number shown in the ad is correct for 1917.....no serial number needed to determine manufacture date.

    Re: Angling the Tailpiece

Also very important, in addition to making the bend correct, is how high off the rim the tailpiece bend is. The bend should be just above/off the rim, providing a better anchor....like tying a rope...

Re: Who has the "Lonnie Porchie" Loar?

Knew of Lonnie before but finally met him at the Louisville 2001 IBMA. And kept in touch until he passed. I remember reading here that Charlie Derrington felt Lonnie's Loar was in the top 5 or so,...

Sounds like "Trigger Finger" to me. This is like a nodule on a tendon trying to slide inside a sheath that's too narrow.More exercise will only aggravate the situation. Infection may cause this too....
