  1. Re: Charles Johnson - Mandolin World Headquarters

    Len B. -

Took me a while to pull the trigger. Dumped 2 guitars to pull it off, and well worth it. It's good.

The Flatiron he has is tempting as well. Take a look if you haven't.

  2. Charles Johnson - Mandolin World Headquarters

Just want to give Charles the props he's due.

Purchased this from him. Just a great, easy experience.

He was honest, patient, and great to work with.

    I wouldn't hesitate to do...

Re: What has your mandolin been called?

It's been called - by others - "Out Of Tune".

    Re: Woodstock

I was fortunate enough to have attended.

I had turned 18 in May, and the festival was in August.

I lived - and still live - on Long Island, NY, so it was only about a 2 1/2 hour drive.

    Being...

    Wow! Sure would be interested!
  6. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

I have 4 and that's a lot fewer instruments than any of my guitarist friends.
  7. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

    Beautiful!
  8. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

Hmmm. Sounds like your wife is a member of the Cafe...........
  9. What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

This came up in a discussion with a friend regarding GAS.
He asked if MAS was as bad.

I gave this some thought and came up with the idea (no research at all done, just a thought) that mandolin...

Yes, it is good. A wonderful sounding Girouard mandolin.

Re: Gibson F5C - Korina back and sides

    That may very well be.

The one I am buying was built in 2012, so they have been doing it for a bit of time.

Re: Gibson F5C - Korina back and sides

I'm not sure that softer tone equates to less volume. To me, it sounded more rounded and less biting, but not quieter.

Obviously I'll know more when I get it.

Re: Gibson F5C - Korina back and sides

First, you guys are MUCH more knowledgeable than I. One of the reasons this is such a great forum.

I was looking for something a little less sharp in tone with more mids and a tad sweeter. When I...

Re: Gibson F5C - Korina back and sides

    Thanks for pointing that out.

    Top is aged spruce.

    I corrected the OP.

Had a guitar I'm selling on my mind and typed quicker than I thought!

Re: Gibson F5C - Korina back and sides

    Thank you, Joey Anchors!

I like the looks as well.

I also like the looks of the old birch backed mandolins.

Priority wise, of course, it's sound and playability first. But if you have an...

Gibson F5C - Korina back and sides

    Did searches, etc.

Korina back and sides, spruce top. Dave Harvey signed.

Appears that people don't like the looks, however the wood gets great reviews for tonal quality as far as I can tell....
  18. Re: Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

No rash, just the vague 'gunk' I'd like to get off.

I want to make sure I don't damage the finish in any way, so I'm hesitant to try anything.

Bill McCall - the one I have is the twin that Ted...
  19. Re: Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

Sent him an email yesterday and waiting for a response.

Was hoping someone here might have some advice.
  20. Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

Recently purchased a used Austin Clark 2 point that is amazing.

It is, however, a bit 'grungy'.

    I'd like to clean it.

Did the normal 'searches' and what I'm seeing is using a slightly damp...

    Re: Bobelock Case Humidistat

I understand and certainly wouldn't rely on it as a rule. In my music room, I have two humidistats that I'm fine with.

It just annoys me that I have to open the case and see this non-functioning...

    Bobelock Case Humidistat

Bought a mandolin that came with a Bobelock case.

The built in case humidistat doesn't work. Pinned to 80%, which is wrong, and it doesn't waver.

I contacted Bobelock who sent me to Howard Core...

    Leave leather strap on?

Did the usual forum searches before posting this, still a little 'unsettled' on what the right thing to do is.

I have an F style mando and an A style mando. Both wonderful.

    I use all leather...

    Re: Thanks Dennis...The Mandolin Store

Throw my hat into this ring as well. Just purchased a Kimble 2-pt. from Dennis and Brian at THE MANDOLIN STORE. Great service and knowledge. I'll be doing business with them again for sure.
