  1. Re: We have a 3-way race: Collings vs Pava vs Gilchrist

Nice going on #638! One below Reischmanís M1 according to the Gilchrist archives. http://www.gilchristmandolins.com/638
  2. Re: We have a 3-way race: Collings vs Pava vs Gilchrist

The Collings and Pava are much different animals as I mentioned in my earlier post.

Jr. is from the same batch of 16 (affectionately known as ‘sweet 16’) in ‘09. They were all very consistent in...
  3. Re: Your thoughts on Ellis A4s and other modern, upper tier ovals

I owned a Collings, then a ‘24 Gibson and then a Gilchrist Model 1jr. Not to say that the Collings wasn’t nice but perhaps just more modern sounding than I preferred. As I recall, brighter and...

    Re: Pre NAMM discussion

I honestly canít see how the body would be able to shift enough to nail the lower point based on the way the bottom end fits on either side of said point. I suppose anything is possible though.

    Re: Pre NAMM discussion

I think the Texans figured this out a few years ago when the case was redesigned.
  6. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

Believe that Gilchrist still uses a simple pantograph router on his plates.

Re: F-4 owned by Norman Blake

Steve made this Model 1 for him last year, so 80+ y/o hasn’t stopped him  Steve’s ovals are incomparable.
  10. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

Agree, check set up/intonation. Perhaps it’s just the photo but the bridge looks a tad forward. The mandolin looks great.

    Re: James Mandolin Tailpiece

The James tailpiece is incomparable to a stamped piece imo, end of discussion.

Re: Opinion on nickel vs. gold aesthetics

It depends...gold hardware can be very appealing with gold matching jewelry and bad rug or comb-over.

    Re: Straps

I’m not a big fan of looping a thong around the body under the fingerboard on an A style mandolin. I assume you’re referring to your Collings...if you don’t want to install a pin, go to the headstock...

Re: Toning down a bright instrument

I won’t belabor this but so there’s no misunderstanding, I did read the thread before my earlier comment... and my point is that it would have been nice to know the mandolin was a freebie and why it...
  18. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

Agree completely. At the time I purchased my Ellis F5 I owned an earlier numbered (1500 range) Collings MF5 blacktop (probably should have kept) but nevertheless I spent about 2 weeks or so with them...

Re: Toning down a bright instrument

I always recommend contacting the person or company who made it first and resolve it that way rather than taking it to an open forum like this. So much can go wrong with this process...

Re: No mando content: Remembering Ginger Baker

What more to say. One of the all time greats, maybe the greatest... can’t help being reminded of Jaco, his undeniable musical genius and intense struggle with his own personal demons.

    Re: Pre Gibson Epiphone Mandolin

Total respect, I’ve been a fan of the machine for years. His current lineup kills.
There’s a great story that accompanies that guitar btw when Rawlings was living in LA. It’s part of his DNA.
