For this first mandolin I just completed, I pieced together my plate carving techniques based on a few methods I've seen online. The insides were carved out mostly by hand after marking depths with...

  3. Newbie question: Mandolin for other instrumentals

I just started learning the mandolin. I'm starting with some basic chords and easy picking technique with old standards ("Red River Valley," etc.). But there are a number of songs that I personally...
  4. Re: Advice on first mandolin building kit/tutorial

Building from scratch has its benefits and its challenges. I chose to build my F5 from scratch, and now I've got the bug. So I'm planning a series of three more. Like you, I have been a woodworker...

    Re: Sides "denting" under tension?

I think I will do nothing and just see how it holds up. If nothing else it will serve as a lesson.

I did not ever see any cracking in the sides evident when I bent them.

    Sides "denting" under tension?

(Sorry, no pictures at the moment. I will try to post some later.)

So, after completing my first build I put the strings on and tuned it such that I was happy with the way it sounded. Other than...

    Re: My first mandolin

That thought has never even crossed my mind, honestly... It has a lot of imperfections. I could list them out for you but would run out of space. Maybe the only value it has is in its novelty?? There...

    Bridge "leaning" toward peghead

I finally started stringing my mandolin today. Th bridge is kind of tilting toward the peghead end of the mandolin. I assume this means the back end angle of the strings is too low? Or maybe I need...

Re: Recommendations for a ruined(?) finish

Thanks, Marty. I will look in to Waterlox.

I always spread my rags out and let them breathe/dry at least overnight before disposal. That is a great tip. Thank you.

Re: Recommendations for a ruined(?) finish

I have decided that I do not have sufficient shop space to safely or effectively do spray finishes. So I'm going to have to stick to hand applied finishes. But I appreciate all suggestions.

Re: Recommendations for a ruined(?) finish

Thanks, Jim. I appreciate it. As I've mentioned, I was not nearly brave enough to attempt a sunburst on this, my first mandolin. I was going for something that looked rustic and maybe a bit worn out....

Sorry for what may be a dumb question. This is my first mandolin. Do I just mark the spot using the tailpiece and then drill a hole?

    Re: Lacquer for first mandolin?

Regarding Tru Oil, is that stuff okay to get on the binding? Do I just wipe it all over? Or do I need to avoid the binding? Thanks.
