Re: Scales for Left Handed Mandolin

Not a popular stance, but I'd submit that if you don't know where every note is on your fingerboard, you're cheating yourself and long term will make things harder.
If you can immediately find all...

I was in Cotton in August. They gave no indication of leaving.

    Iluak Ivory - gone??

Does anyone have any info about Iluak Ivory?
They were a good source of wooden strap buttons and such. They seem to have disappeared from Amazon and Google.

Re: Your Thoughts On D'Addario XT Strings

I have XTs on a couple of mandolins. I never liked EXPs because they felt 'sticky' to me. The XTs feel better and seems to be lasting well, but I can't say that I like their sound any better than...

    Re: Point of Diminishing Returns

A slightly different approach might be to stop practicing the tune you're working on and instead, play some chords to accompany yourself singing a song that you like.

Then find a new way to finger...

    Re: Common Chord shapes

Might also try these for the 'treble-side' chop chords:

    432x for G7
    654x for A7, etc...

Flows easily from the G or A chords (just keep the index finger in place) and sounds good to me. No...

    Re: Economy or alternate picking

You'll get lots of opinions and certainly lots of great pickers break the rules. but...

You should learn to play mandolin with alternate picking. When you've mastered that, you can do whatever...

A little more info about what kind of bridge and exactly which part you're asking about would help. And maybe a picture with markings on it if possible.

    Re: Again with the picks

You mention in "3." that "They're large, but...."

If you like a slightly smaller pick, the Primetone triangles also come in a 'small' size, which I like a lot.

    Re: Common Chord shapes

Like many, I use the chop chord pattern a lot:

    A: 9-7-4-5
    Am: 9-7-3-5
F#m (relative minor of A): 6-4-4-x which is actually just a 1-5 'power chord' which can be used as a minor or a major...
