Re: This isn't right is it?

I’m no luthier but well experienced enough to know exactly what needs doing and exactly what to ask for. The bridge looks to be right down at its lowest point so, if the action is too high, surgery...

Re: This isn't right is it?

The nut has been too high on almost every new instrument I’ve ever bought on the basis that it’s easier to lowerva nut than raise it.

The quick way to check is to compare the distance between the...

    Re: Got my first mando:)

How on earth are you going to manage without the top 3 frets? They’re there primarily to gather dust! Stick at it and it won’t be long before you’re looking for another one.

    I take it that you’re...

    Re: Uneven frets...done deliberately??

Incompetance? Thought it was a guitar? - I bet it has a dot on the nineth rather than the tenth fret.
  5. Re: Cleaning & polishing "German silver" on metal-body National

Umpteen years ago a friend of mine stripped an old painted National body (the one with a palm tree on the back) and had it plated. He made a new neck for it and it was fine. I suspect that it...

Re: Looking for information on an old mandolin

What’s the scale length? Looks a bit long for a mandolin but impossible to tell from a photograph.
  7. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

With respect to 20 year old tech not being up to todays standards, whilst some tech has moved on, as far as I’m aware, a piezo pickup sold today will be largely the same as one sold years ago.

A cleat is a small sliver of wood glued across a crack to reinforce it.

    Great strap!
  10. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

I’m just wondering whether installing the strap button caused the crack?

Re: mountable pickup - where ?

Bear in mind that it’s not entirely down to where you stick it or what you stick it with. What you plug it into will have a major influence on how well it works.

Re: Humidity in Case vs Room

Case but 32 doesn’t sound ridiculously low. Ideal is around 50. How accurately are you able to measure it?

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

Are you sure he “made” it for you? From your photo’ it appears to have the “Pat. Pending” stamp so it could well be a period one.

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

Yes, the Ibanez guard is sitting on a shelf and looks no different than when I took it off.

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

Not sure if there’s any truth in the view that it only happens on later models. There’s no problem with my ‘15A and my 24 Snakehead but I discovered it on my ‘76 Ibanez a couple of years ago. If it’s...

Re: Any Ideas of Make or value?

No idea but, if you look carefully at the second photo’, the headstock does have a badge which says “Lithuania”.

    Re: Octave mandolin strings

Thanks David but there’s really no need. I’m quite happy with the Newtones; they’re manufactured just down the road from me and the strings are generally as cheap as anything else. That said, apart...
  18. Re: So nice to hear and see these guys playing together again.

Pity we no longer have Kongar-ol Ondar as part of the Flecktones - he died in 2013. His vocal contributions were unforgetable.

    Re: Octave mandolin strings

My OM is slightly shorter at around 20.75” and also takes ball end strings. As I’ve said before, I use custom sets of Newtone strings - they’ll put together whatever you want. I don’t use octave...

I’ve not bought anything since the plague started. Whether this is because my MAS has waned or that mandolin family instruments of any quality have been largely absent from the UK market is difficult...

    Re: String dampening

If it’s foam, make sure it doesn’t contain vinyl. Vinyl plays havoc with nitrocelulose laquer.
