  1. Re: I'll See You In My Dreams - Django transcribed for mandolin

Thank you Jordan! Spent a few hours on your transcription last night - I will be able to play the "head" up to speed soon, the rest may follow. Django's solos are built around guitarist shapes &...

    Re: Blue Chips

With flat top guitars or oval hole mandolins, I always seemed to keep a spare inside the body of the instrument!

    Re: Lonesome Moonlight Waltz

Russ: That was a great Mando Mania session arranged by Tony Williamson at Merlefest. He always gets together a great gathering of the mandolin players in most of the bands for an hour of...

    Re: Burtenshaw Mandolin #15...

Great sounding attractive instrument! I like to see (and hear) examples of mandolins that are constructed using tone woods other than traditional maple for the backs and sides (even tho I love...

Re: Back to guitar after mandolin break

Be careful: you might find yourself > 6 months since you picked up a guitar. If that is the case, your guitar chops will be a bit rusty (don't ask how I know).

Paul: The documentary is available for purchase thru Vimeo, and other platforms, and I think is in NetFlick's vaults as a documentary. Several PBS stations are still airing the movie - check your...

Re: Post A picture of your favorite "A" model

My biggest raise came when my youngest graduated from college and the mortgage was paid off! I had permission from a mandolin facilitator... and sold a few instruments to make room for the Nugget.

I like the best pick up for a banjo better: F-150; F-250 for dual pickups!
  12. Re: edit of the bluegrass album with only bobby hick's solos

Since you've already messed with this album - Doyle's mandolin playing on the Bluegrass Album would be mighty fine!
  13. Re: Sunday picking sessions at my house are keeping me alive...

I have gathered together with 2-3 friends for almost 24 years most Sunday (occasional Saturday) afternoons. Initially we all played "Spanish" style guitars with an Americana type repertoire. As we...
  14. Re: Y'all missed some great mandolin playing in Asheville

Frank Solivan (left - leads Dirty Kitchen) and Don Stiernberg (right - leads the Don Stiernberg Group) as an incredible duo. They burned up the frets! A great mix of traditional, Bluegrass (sans...
  15. Y'all missed some great mandolin playing in Asheville

These two really played their hearts out last night. They played some Nude Goats - oops I mean Good Notes - all night long. Don and Frank - I'd drive 200+ miles to see these guys anytime!

Re: Leather straps: flat or braided?

Get a 2 pack of 48"leather shoelaces - can use a single cord as is, or can easily do a flat braid (or go online & learn a round braid). That's what I've used on most of my mandolins & works fine. ...
  17. Re: Country Mandolin players in the Honky-Tonk era

For contemporary groups playing "traditional" 40s-60s country, the Malpass Brothers incorporate mandolin in their throw-back repertoire. They're great!

Love a non-traditional design. That really looks like a complete re-thinking of mandolin form! Would love to hear a sound clip when it's done.

With your budget, the world is your oyster. It would be worth using a bit of your budget to travel to someplace where you can try a variety of different mandolins. The right one will find you.
